Question about Garmin Nuvi 660 GPS Receiver

Speaker of garmin nuvi 660 doesn't work anymore

Hello,

I also have the same problem with my nuvi. My internal speaker also doen't work anymore.
Today I opened the garmin with the intention to solder the speaker wires again. I thougt that the wires made a bad connection. But against my expectation the wires made a very good connection. So the conclusion is a broken speaker.
Now I need to replace the speaker. Can you tell me where I can find/order a similar speaker. For your information I come from Holland.

Best regards

The headphones still work. Today I measured the resistance of the speaker between the + and -. This is approximate 1500kOhm. It varies when you tap on the speaker (goes from 1300 to 1800KOhm). In my eyes this means that the speaker is not totally broken. Please correct me of I am wrong.

Jim do you know the specs of this speaker? If I have them I can try to look here in Holland to find a similar speaker.

    Hi Bruce,

On my repair bench at home, I have a Nuvi that is open. I will measure the speaker resistance for you and let you know what it should be.

1500 ohms is high to me. The speaker should be somewhere between 8 ohms and 32 ohms, the same as a typical set of headphones. After all, the headphone jack is just a switch that switches the Nuvi's audio amp between the internal speaker and the headphones. You would want the impedance to be the same either way.

If you want to do a quick test. Get a pair of alligator clip test leads. Connect them across the speaker leads of your Nuvi and the other ends onto the plug of your headphones or another speaker. If you hear sound and its good, then your Nuvi speaker is bad.

The resistance should not change when you tap on it. The speaker voice coil is fixed to specific resistance. It's essentially a piece of wire wrapped in a coil. The resistance should not change.

    Hi,

The Nuvi 660 uses the same speaker as a Nuvi 350. You might be able to locate an as-is unit on eBay and swap them out.

I am in the process of finding a source for this speaker. It's a 1.3" Diameter speaker and held in place with adhesive.

Do you hear sound with the headphones? if so, the speaker is bad.

Bruce,

I measured a speaker on a Nuvi that I had opened up on my repair bench. It measured 7.8 ohm. I'm pretty confident that your speaker is bad.

Thew Nuvi 660 uses the same speaker as the nuvi 350. It's held in with adhesive.

Nuvi 660 internal speaker quit working and freezes sometimes on a street-- what do I do? Very recent problem.... at first I thought it was becasue it is overly cloudy here recently and maybe it couldn't...

Open the the antenna and look on the back. There is a small reset button. Push that button to reboot the software. This should clear up the problem.

No sound from Garmin nuvi 760 by any method

Sounds like your speaker went south. Since your fm transmitter is working I'll be your earphone jack is too. So you could always use an earphone. Only other option is a speaker replacement.

Audio gone from my gps garmin nuvi 660

If you can hear audio through the headphone jack but not the internal speaker jack, then the speaker is bad.

This is a problem I have seen many times before. I will be posting an article soon on how to replace the internal speaker, however this is not a repair that just anyone can do.

You have to have skills in dissassembly & soldering.
