I have purchased Norton anti-virus protection - but recently had to reset my laptop so all the previous settings were lost. I have tried sending Norton/Symantec eMails to ask how to restore this - but so...

I suggest going with one of the free anti-virus solutions and ditching Norton. Try "AVG8 Free". I use it all the time and have never had a problem. It is free for personal use, but not free for corporate use. Just make sure you download the "free" version, not the commercial version.

The web address is:
http://free.avg.com/download?prd=afe

A lot of people also like the free versions of Avira AntiVir personal, and Avast Home Edition.

Download.com (from C/Net) has them all as well, plus reviews.

Ive got norton all ready on my pc it has got 6 days left on it can install a new one now or do have to wait till it has run out

First, its a trial, meaning that if you want to continue using norton AFTER the trial time is over (6days according to what you said), then you must buy the full version from their website.
Wait until it expires, and then purchase it from their website so you can keep using it forever.
Though even if you uninstall it and re-install it after it expires, it still would be expired until you purchase it.

Cheers ;)

You need to use the special Norton removal tool. It used to be called NoNav, but they've apparently changed it. Go to this link:
http://solutions.symantec.com/sdccommon/asp/symcu_defcontent_view.asp?ssfromlink=true&sprt_cid=00c2f7ea-bc27-45c4-82e9-8acd2dd73daa&docid=20070828203435EN
At step three, you'll see a button for downloading their removal tool.
Because of the way Norton installs, you can't just "uninstall" it like a normal program. It wraps itself around your system and registry in a bunch of places, so you have to use their special tool.

Nice of them to tell you, huh?

Corrupted files

If you are running Windows XP you can do a system restore. Go back to yesterday. If the files are something you created today you can try something like Tune Up Utilities Undelete, free trial.

I have norton 360 and the pc tune up keeps saying outdated files left on computer but even when i run the scan it is not doing anything and the big red cross remains

Hi,
You need to run an update.
This will check Nortons Site, for recent Downloads. Anti-virus definitions Files et,c.
If you have only purchased a trial version, or version has Expired. Then it won,t let you access thier database without paying.
To resolve this, you could un-install Norton. And Re-install.
ensure your connected to the Internet before attempting updates.

If i can assist further please post-here.
