Window Unit doesn't cool

I purchased a 6,000 btu unit 2 weeks ago and the unit froze ...with lots of ice coming out the front....I thawed it out with a blow dryer (melted a small place on the front of the unit) and now it doesn't cool. What do I do?

Brand New 2 weeks old 4 ton Trane compressor leaks a lot of water onto pad

If the unit is running in cold weather than there is ice building up on the coils located outside. This is normal in that the unit is running in heat pump mode heating inside and cooling outside, After the unit detects the ice build up it briefly reverses the cycle heating the outside coils melting(defrosting) the ice which you observe as water on the pad.

The video gives you an example of the defrost cycle!

LOL no it seems to work properly . But with the heat wave going on it appears that you have the temp set to low . If the filter is clean and all other things are fine then try turning it up a few degrees but only after yo have de iced it.. also look inot the coils and be certain that they are clean . it's just all the heat and not the unit in my humble opion.

My window ac shut completly off. There was barly air coming out...then it shut off and there was ice in it.

If the A/C was running constantly, even when the temperature has dropped outside, the a/c unit can freeze up. Just let it thaw out, the ice will melt. Then turn it back on but turn it on at a higher temperature. Then ease it to the lowest temperature or highest cool setting. You probably have a clogged filter in the front of the a/c unit which takes in the air. These can be cleaned.

Hello, I can assist you.

If the unit is supposed to turn off and it doesn't, it will be necessary to check several things.

  • First, is the unit cooling properly? See the section entitled "The air is cool but doesn't seem cold enough."

  • Next, is the temperature of the room adequately cool? If the room temperature is cold enough try setting the thermostat to a higher temperature. If the unit then seems to work properly leave the thermostat set to the higher temperature.

  • If the unit is cooling properly when it is turned on and the room is not cool enough the problem is probably that the unit is trying to cool an area that is too large for its capacity. Use the following chart to find the appropriate size air conditioner to use:

AREA TO BE COOLED / CAPACITY (BTU/HR)

100 to 150 square feet = 5,000

150 to 250 square feet = 6,000

250 to 300 square feet = 7,000

300 to 350 square feet = 8,000

350 to 400 square feet = 9,000

400 to 450 square feet = 10,000

450 to 550 square feet = 12,000

550 to 700 square feet = 14,000

700 to 1000 square feet = 18,000

If the room is heavily shaded, reduce needed capacity by 10%

If the room receives a lot of direct sun, increase needed capacity by 10%

Add 600 Btu/Hr for each person in the room if there are more than two people

If the unit is for a kitchen, increase the capacity by 4,000-6,000 Btu/Hr.

If the room size is too big for the air conditioner you have two possible choices. Either decrease the room size by shutting some doors or partitioning off an area of the room. Or, increase the BTU of the air conditioner for that room by installing a different air conditioner with a higher BTU rating.

Yes, if the filters are clean, the coils are clean, and it is still freezing up in cooling mode, then it is low on refridgerant.

Bought an airconditioner about two weeks ago,the unit is 26.000 btu and is not performing the way it should be.

Hey,, have you checked ot the back coils from the inside out? This unit should cool enough to hang meat! If dirty and plugged, itwon't remove heat and sends it back in the front coils,,,(see where I'm going with this !) A window unit should have at least 20*- 25* temp. different from the air blowing out the front coils and the air sucking in! (If less than 15*, low on freon!) Thank-you-very-much!

Have a coleman evcon heating & cooling furnace froze up had ice on coil / top of unit. Husband cut the unit off to thaw out not the unit will not come back on.

Freon (charge) is low. Contact a service man with the proper gauges to check theunit. It will have to be evacuated, nitrogen pressure tested, and then recharged.. Depending on the size of the unit, this cold be about 200-400$.
