I have a Sony vaio PCG 5K7P, and it's not getting started...when I switch it on...only the fan works and the lights on wifi and the charger are working....no display on the screen and no processor

Laptop on, shine a flashlight at the LCD screen at various angles.
If you see a faint image the problem is the Backlight, or screen Inverter.

90 PERCENT OF THE TIME the fault can be attributed to a bad screen Inverter.
(IF the laptop uses a screen Inverter.
CCFL backlighting uses a screen Inverter.
LED backlighting may, or may Not use a screen Inverter)

No faint images?

See if the problem is the graphics chipset, or Video Cable, or inside the Display Assembly.

Graphics chipset:
Laptop OFF, monitor OFF, connect a VGA monitor to the VGA port, on the laptop.

This is an example of a VGA Cable, and VGA connector, (port),

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_Connector

Scroll down a little for cable example.
You can use a CRT type of monitor, (Looks like a small TV), or a flat LCD screen monitor if it has a VGA cable.

Turn the monitor on. If a CRT type of monitor allow it to warm up.
Turn the laptop on.
By factory default settings, the display should show on the external VGA monitor.
IF not;

There are at least 3 display options available;
1) Internal monitor of laptop ONLY
2) Internal monitor of laptop AND external VGA monitor
3) External VGA monitor ONLY

Hold the Fn key down, and at the same time tap once on the F8 key. (The F8 key is the Display Toggle-Over key)
Still no display on external VGA monitor?
Hold the Fn key down again, and tap once more on the F8 key.

No display on external monitor, suggests a problem with the graphics chipset.

Most of the time the graphics chipset itself isn't the problem.
It is due to inadequate cooling for the graphics chipset, and this causes a problem with the MOUNTING, of the graphics chipset TO motherboard. (BGA surface mount)

If this is found to be the problem I will go into more detail.
I don't believe that is your problem, but there is NO guessing here.
We are following a diagnostic flowchart.

Good graphics on the external VGA monitor, means there is a problem with the Video Cable, or inside the Display Assembly.

A) Video Cable connections can be loose.
Connection at motherboard side, or connection of small cable to screen Inverter from Video Cable, (IF it uses a screen Inverter), or connection at back of LCD screen.

A LOT of times a loose connection can cause what you are seeing.

Video Cable could be damaged. Wires inside stretched/broken.

Inside the Display Assembly:
Video Cable checks out after a continuity test, then the screen Inverter is next in the diagnosis. (IF a screen Inverter is used)

Screen Inverter proves to be good, the problem is the LCD screen.
NO screen Inverter is used, the problem is the LCD screen.

Sony drives me crazy with their model numbering system.
What is the other model number on the bottom of the laptop?
Start with a VGN?
Post back in a Comment.

Once I have a model number I can deal with, I will post back with step by step info, and additional manual information.
(Service Manual. Perhaps pictorial guides, and video/s)

Black screen delld600

Several things can cause your Dell Latittude D600 laptop's LCD screen to stop working.

Two of the most common causes relate directly to the inverter board and the backlight lamp.

The inverter board is a thin circuit board placed inside the LCD panel.

It's main function is to transfer power from the motherboard to the backlight bulb inside the LCD screen.

If the inverter board goes bad or the backlight lamp burns out, the screen will appear dim or eventually go completely black.

Turn off the laptop, unplug the power cable, close the LCD panel and place the laptop face down.

Remove the battery pack from its compartment on the bottom of the computer.

Flip the laptop back over and reopen the display panel all the way until it is in a 180-degree position.

Insert a flat head screwdriver into the right side of the keyboard bezel.

This is the plastic strip situated above the top row of keyboard keys. Carefully pry the bezel from the laptop.

Remove the two Phillips screws located above the top row of keyboard keys.

Grasp the top edge of the keyboard, tilt it upward and lay the keyboard face down on the palm rest area.

Unplug the keyboard's ribbon cable from the motherboard connector.

Carefully remove the entire keyboard from the laptop.

Disconnect the video and speaker cables extending from either side of the LCD panel to the motherboard.

Loosen the Phillips head screws on each LCD panel hinge.

Carefully lift the entire LCD panel off the laptop's base.

Relocate the panel to a flat work surface, and place the panel so the screen is facing upward.

Use a thin, flat head screwdriver to pry the rubber screw covers from the LCD panel's front plastic cover.

Remove the Phillips head screws revealed by the rubber covers.

Carefully remove the front plastic cover from the display panel.

Locate the inverter board situated below the LCD screen, inside the bottom edge of the display panel.

Disconnect the two cables from each end of the inverter.

Remove the two Phillips head screws fastening the inverter to the display panel.

Carefully lift the inverter board out of the display panel, and dispose of it.

Repeat this procedure in reverse to install the new inverter board, and reassemble the laptop.

Hope this helps

Black screen, only sound

common problem with LCD TV is a dead screen but there is a sound. so the problem is always coming from inverter board inside the lcd, inverter board controls the ccfl bulbs that illuminate the image in the screen. there are 4 or more bulbs inside your screen supplied by inverter board. you can see this inside at the back of the screen there are 4 boards inside, display driver board, power supply board ,inverter board and input board, this could be repaired or replace.but you need some tools for opening the case and test equipment. add comment if you want some help.. hope i help you.... thanks.....

Every minute or so the screen flickers and kind of rolls for minute or so. if you hold laptop hard or hit it then stops flickering

Nice to know. So what is the problem?

OH I'M JUST KIDDING!

See if the Display Cable has a loose connection.
The Display Cable is inside the Display Assembly, and comes out by one of the hinges, then plugs into the motherboard of the laptop.

The Display Assembly consists of the Top Cover, Bezel, LCD Screen assembly, Inverter, Display cable, and often the Wireless Antenna, and it's connecting cable.

Usual method is to remove all power to the laptop, AC adapter (Charger) and Battery.
Then remove the LED Display Cover, (Under the LCD screen, and in front of the Keyboard)
Then some have to have the Keyboard removed.

Check that connection.
Also remove the Bezel, (Frame going around the LCD screen on the inside), and check the LCD screen to Inverter connection.

If it all checks fine suspect the Inverter.

If I knew the laptop's manufacturer Name, and Model Number, I could give you more than the generic prattle above. (It's on the bottom of the laptop. Post in a Comment)

Fade display problem

Try attaching an external monitor to the laptop & see if you could get any display on it. If this is successful, then you might have either a faulty LCD cable or screen inverter board.
The LCD cable transfers data signal from the motherboard & video card to the LCD screen. It also supplies high voltage DC power to the screen inverter board. The screen inverter board works as a power supply for the backlight lamp mounted inside the LCD screen. It converts low voltage DC power to high voltage AC power needed for the backlight lamp.

The screen on my compaq armada is blank. i can

The display panel itself is probably fine, but its backlight isn't working. Without the backlight you can't see the display. There's a small circuit board called the inverter inside the display that provides power for the backlight.

It's pretty easy to replace the inverter. You need to take out whatever screws are holding the front half of the display to the back and remove the front. The inverter is at the bottom of the display, held in by a couple of screws. A couple of cables plug into it.

Here is a place that claims they have the inverter in stock for $7.39. That is one fantastic price! Get one of those and a set of miniature Phillips screwdrivers and you'll be able to fix this yourself.
