The evaporator coil (the one in the freezer) has frozen up twice in the past week. We do not have kids in the house, so I am certain the door is not open too much. The door seal is in very good shape, however I cleaned it and lubricated it per instruction manual any way. Unit is only about 2 1/2 years old, it is not digital but does have an electronic control board (as most things do these days). Where should I look first? I am average in electrical skills for a homeowner. I have already cleaned the condensor coil, freezer thawed out about a month before the evaporator problem started, it was dirty but everything was good after I cleaned it. Thanks for any help, can not afford to buy a new one, and do not think that is necessary at this time but I could be wrong.
There is a pc board that senses how long the condensor motor has been running and when it gets to a certain amount of time it turns off the refridgerator condensor and turns on the heater coil that melts any ice formed on the condensor coils untill a temperature sensor says enough then it allows the condensor motor to run again. The problem is definitely in this board which is a common problem with Whirlpool and related brands. This board is about 50 to 75 dollars and can be easily replaced.

SOURCE: GE Side by Side refrigerator/freezer Evaporator keeps freezing up
Sounds like the auto-defrost timer has gone bad. In many cases, that is the cause. Check with GE service.

My ge refrigerator coils ice up every three or four days; in which my wife and I use hair dryer to deice. Every day water freezes in the space below the coils and I have to chip it out. I plugged the outlet drain to keep the water from running on the floor and ruining my flooring. I am tired of paying repairmen. I replaced the heater element, it had burned out. But it made little difference. I don't know whether I should replace the thermostat or the board or both.
Water dispenser in freezer door freezes up every other day after I thaw it out with a hair dryer. This has done this since it was new, however GE states that they have never had any complaints about this problem and would do nothing. GE will not stand behind their products and refuse to admit any defects in their appliances. I have told at least 50 people not to buy GE and have related my experience. I have even approached people in a store looking at GE refridgerators to purchase, so as to warn them. I will NEVER purchase another GE product.
We did replace the mother board and the problem is still occurring.
