Even if you restore the device to factory settings and clear the previous owners settings, images etc from the device the device will still have the same serial number which apple or the previous owner may be able to trace when the device goes to register online (something it will need to do to access the itunes store).

There are also apps which allow owners of stolen devices to take a photo of whomever is holding their device which they can then bring to the police along with the GPS location settings showing where the device is.

Of course, if the previous owner had the device set up to upload images to their cloud account images you have taken of you, your friends and surroundings may already be in their possession......

Questions: if the device is indeed stolen,

1 - do you really want to answer to the police why you are in possession of a stolen device?

2- if it was your ipad that had been stolen, wouldn't you appreciate someone helping you get it back?

There is one thing you can do if you have the serial number of your device. You can find it on the device itself and on a sticker on the packaging of your device. If your device was registered to your TomTom account, you could try contacting TomTom support by phone and ask if they can give you the serial number when you provide them you're account data.
Once you have the serial number you go to the police station and inform them your device was stolen. If you're lucky, one day the police will find the gagsters who stole your GPS, and if they find lots of stolen products, they will probably check the police computer to check if the serial numbers are reported as stolen.

No, a GPS device will only receive signals from the satellites in space. A GPS will never transmit any signal to the satellites because it's a one way communication.
If you have the serial number (you can find it on the device itself or on the box) you could go to the police and inform them your GPS was stolen and provide them your serial number. If you're lucky and the police finds a gang of thieves and they find lot's of stolen things, they will check the serial numbers through the police computer to check if they're not reported as stolen. Then there is a chance you will get your GPS back.

Car GPS units are receivers only. They do not have a transmitter that can be used for tracking. I am sorry that it was stolen. Report it to Garmin and the police. Also, post it at the following link so people can be made aware of it:

There is no way for you to trace your phone unless you have before it was stolen set up some tracking service for it or software on the phone.

Too bad, you have to talk to the police and report the phone stolen, the IMEI can get blacklisted as stolen and the phone can't be used to receive or make calls in your country.

There is no way to trace it, if it was stolen as it runs off a satelight. Only way is if you registered it and had it linked to your cell phone. Cell phones for example can be traced, because when you have a cell phone, you can link it up with the phone number on a web sight and go onto a computer and enter in number and the link will search your phone based on the number and gps location of the phone. But when you have a portable gps like yours, it is impossible to locate it via any computer unless you had some program prior to link it with your computer or cell phone. It is not possible to trace your cell phone, even if you hadsetup a tracker program on the phone, it can only give the location of yourcell phone in the coverage area where the cell phone transmitter tower islocated.

You cannot lock the unit remotely. If you have entered a PIN on the unit, it will not be usable to whomever stole it as it will ask for the PIN every time it is turned on. Unfortunately, as it comes from the factory, it cannot be traced, either. I'm sorry. I had one stolen, too.

If your meaning can you track the GPS, no you cannot track a GPS unless it has a tracker fitted, you cannot trace it if it has been stolen,
Ironically, they work in the opposite way to a tracker, it is a locater, not a tracker

Garmin has a large hard drive with all the points of interest inside the device.
All the device does is read the GPS coordinates that are broadcasted by the GPS satellites and processes data based on what it receives. It doesn't need to send any information to a central server.
If GPS was able to communicate two ways, there wouldn't be a need to purchase map upgrades for new roads, points of interest, etc...
I just got my Garmin stolen within the past 23 hours, and as much as I wish there was a way, there isn't...
