I have an Olympus Camedia Digital Photo Printer P-10, which I've owned for 2-3 years. This is the first time the ribbon needed to be replaced when I still had many sheets of photo paper left (my paper tray is full!). Does this mean the ribbon cartridge was faulty?

According to Olympus the 10-year old model P-10 Digital Photo Printer only supports Windows 98/ME/2000/XP and specifically says that it will not function with Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit.
If you are running Windows 7 Professional, you can install XP Mode (free from Microsoft) and then install the P-10 within Windows XP to use it that way.
Firstly check your charger. I was having problems with my batteries packing up after about 1 hours use. Now I only charge 2 at a time (its a 4 battery charger) and the problem is no more. There is a limited life on batteries, check how old they are and if you've had them more than 3 or 4 years, I suggest you buy replacements. John
If you can get to the ribbon cable that the zoom lever is attached to, you can use a multimeter or a continuity tester to see if the lever is actually shorting any traces on the ribbon. the zoom lever acts upon a motor that rotates the iner lens barrel, possible the motor lead is open or the switch under the lever is dirty/faulty.
