5 hp Briggs and Stratton snow blower

No spark

    8 hp briggs & stratton on tiller. Installled new points/condenser and set gap @ 0.020. no spark. Was running but erattically, ie, after it warmed up, began to misfire. Noticed coil had approx. .030 gap on one side but other side was touching flywheel. Set gaps the same but still no fire.

Easest way is to remove shutoff wire from coil and then see if you have spark - if this is a point system it prob needs points and condenser

it is prob a 13/16 this is the most common most of the time you cannot get a wrench on a plug but a socket , if it is smaller then it is a 5/8 lefty loosie righty tighty do not over tighten the plug

Remove the nut that holds the float bowl on and clean the hole on the side and the hole that goes down the center of the bolt.

No spark and will not start

remove blower shroud off top of engine.Remove grass screen first.disconnect ignition kill wire from coils,retest for spark,if no spark check kill wire,wire that was disconnected from coils for short to ground.If wire checks ok,replace coils.Forty years in small engine repair.

Backfires thrue carb

You may have an intake valve staying open or the spark timing may be off from a slipped flywheel and key. Can spray liguid wrench in the intake to coat valve stem . You would have to take off the flywheel hold down nut and pull starter engage ring to see if the groove in the flywheel matches the groove in the crankshaft. Ive had blowers, weed eaters, tillers and all kinds of small engines break a flywheel key for no apparent reason. Sometimes they are just a little loose and wear out or snap.

Check engine oil.

Remove wire from low oil sensor and the start.

Replace low oil sensor.
