I mostly use ps3 for watching bly-day and dvds. Once I get the sound it is good till I turn off the ps3. Then I try to restart it and no sound? I can see the picture without any problem.
Like yesterday, I tried re-starting ps3 several times and I could not get the sound for a movie. Then I tried again after couple of hours and magic, I could hear the crstal clear sound.
I checked all my sound settings and I have kept them to Auto.

You describe the exact same problem I am having.

It is very random on how to get the sound to disappear. The sound only goes away on an occasional boot of the PS3. The only way I know how to bring the audio back is to shut down the ps3 and force boot (hold down the power button ON until you hear 2 beeps to reset both display and audio configuration). Then I have to re auto configure the Display and audio to optimal settings.

I have the new XBR6 from Sony and use HDMI input for both video and audio through the TV.

TV works fine. Sound spontaneously disappears for 24-72 hours without warning.   It happens every 2-3 weeks.  Cable guys have been here countless times and changed boxes etc.  Missed olympics and debates because of this.  Verified TV speaker functionality by bypassing cable box directly from wall source to TV but Time Warner says it is not their problem.   If the HDMI cables are at fault why is it intermittent and ALWAYS for at least 48 hours before the  magic recovery of sound function?  Oh yes, I dont have PS3 hooked up.

I have the exact same problem.

I have my PS3 connected to a Sony Z4100 HDTV through a Sony HDMI cable and sometimes there's just no sound whatsoever. It doesn't happen with specific games or movies, just randomly at boot.

I tried restarting the PS3 and the HDTV and it works sometimes, but not always.

I am having the same problem.. I used to play or watch movies with my ps3 and have been doing without problems for months, and then suddenly yesterday I came back from my trip, powered my ps3 on and there was an update for the software of my PS3. And then suddenly, the patch was installed and the sound went off.. Anyway, I thought it was the patch that might have a problem and that it was Sony's fault (and I still think its that). I tried to restore setting defaults and nothing, did restore settings by holding the power button down too, and nothing, tried to play movies or games, and no sound. I even tried changing the HDMI cable and nothing. I left my ps3 to rest, and then about 1 hour later turned it on and there was sound, I put in my Guitar Hero game in and the sound went off again... I still haven't found a solution!! THE HDMI Cable is not it.. another solution perhaps??

It first started while i was watching a blu-ray movie, in the middle of the movie, the screen jumped like there was a power disruption, then no sound. then it happened in an sd dvd, and today while in the middle of little big planet. Usually i just have to rewind the movie to before the "hiccup" and the sound comes back on, but with the game, i had to exit to the ps3 main menu, then restart the game. any idea why this hapopens? i do not think it's an hdmi cable problem, as this happens only with the bluray. i don't think it's an audio default problem either, because it happens well into movies or games while in the middle of a scene.

Same problem, have PS3 running through a HDMI cable from the Sony PS3 HDMI + USB2.0 Cable pack and is connected to my Samsung SyncMaster2693hm monitor. Every so often at random all sound cuts out completely, if I exit DVD or game there is no sound in the main PS3 menu and I need to restart the PS3 to gain sound again. I have moved the PS3 location to my main tv where it was running fine with component cables and tried the HDMI cord there and the problems continue. (Incase you wonder why, the tv is too big for 1st person shooters and we actually get motion sickness so it was moved to the computer monitor, lol.)

Just trying to say viewing device does not matter and just seems to be either this HDMI cable or a problem with the PS3 running with a HDMI cord.

When you say "every so often" what does that mean? Are there certain things like games, videos, bluray movies that produce sounds while others do not....or does sound cut in and out as your watching/playing the same thing?

You might want to try another HDMI cable...the one you have may have a short in it. You can find HDMI cables for really cheap online so it's not a big deal to buy on eor two more as back up. Also, try changing the audio settings with in the BluRay or DVD itself. Sometimes the movies can default to an unsuppotred audio format.

NO audio on my TV/PS3 while TV connected with receiver via HDMI

Check the audio settings in the PS3 console. Then check the firmware version of HDMI that your receiver uses. It may be listed on the manufacturers webpage or in your manual. It must be 1.3a or 1.3b in order to work with your PS3. The downside to this is that there is no firmware "patch" to correct the problem. If you still have issues, post a reply on this thread and I can help you further and give you some options that "Will" correct the problem without degrading video and audio. Hope this helps.

How to connect the PS3 to RX-V365 to get best sound qualitity in films. I have sony BRAVIO LCD wiht PS3 and I recently bought RX-V365 Yamaha home theater system. Please advice on connecting all three to...

You can connect PS3 video via HDMI to receiver and from receiver via HDMI to TV. But RX-V365 doesn't support HDMI audio, so you have to connect audio separately via SPDIF digital cable. I think PS3 uses optical SPDIF, so you will need optical cable. If you can't find cheaps optical cables in your shop, you can try byuing from ebay ($1-5 max.)

PS3 surround sound

You will need the optical cable. My receiver only passes video through the hdmi. So I hooked up the HDMI cable to the tv, and the optical cable to the receiver. Once that is done you have to go to the audio settings for the PS3 and chose audio through the optical.

How to Connect HDMI Components with AVR 3805 as Hub

In reference to the comment you added to our chat session:

Just connect your receiver to your TV using the same cable your receiver is currently using to connect to your TV, be it Composite, S-Video, or Component. Just switch your TV to that input when you need to set-up something on the receiver.

I have looked up the infomation on your TV I noticed that your TV has two HDMI input plugs. Since your SONY BRAVIA is hooked up to one port, you need to buy another HDMI cable for your PS3. On your tv remote you should have an option to switch from video 1 to video 2 so then you can switch from the SONY BRAVIA to the PS3 the problem is you will only hear your PS3 Sound from you TV. If you want to hear your PS3 sound from your SONY BRAVIA you need to buy an optical cable (also called TOSLINK) to connect from your PS3 to the SONY BRAVIA.

Hope that helps!

Playstation 3 audio connection into Yamaha HTR-6040 AV Receiver

Is Yamaha HTR-640 a receiver? Try HDMI from PS3 to receiver or Sony HDTV. If HDMI from PS3 to receiver the you need and HDMI from receiver to out Sony HDTV. You could connect everything to receiver and HDMI out to HDTV. You can not have an HDMI cable AND an optical cable coming out of the PS3, only one or the other.
