First - re-seat the harddisk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot andgo into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If itdoesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty. Next - to check if the harddrive is faulty, remove the hard drive and insert it into an USB hard drive adapter and connect it to a workingcomputer's USB port. If this computer cannot see itas an external hard drive and you cannot open the various folders and files, this confirms the hard drive is faulty. Then the hard drive needsto be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer orlaptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioningcomputer/laptop again.

If you have a 'Disc Crash' then your disc is probably no good any longer. By "Getting your machine to boot", I'm guessing you mean, "how do I get my data off it before I replace the disc". I suggest you buy the most valuable piece of equipment I've ever purchased, which will allow you to remove the disc and hook it up as a USB device to another machine and simply "Drag'N'Drop" the data off the old HDD. Here's a link to the one I purchased for just $12.99 plus S/H:

Hope this helps and best of luck.
