Update propblem.... I recently updated my garmin street pilot and now I can't get it to register anything outside of Virginia...I'm in Georgia. I tried to reset it my entering Georgia as the State but that didn't work either. Need help fast, I use this baby every date. Thanks, dwmshorton@yahoo.com

Chances are you have the wrong region installed. try updating again and check which region was installed. Also, I'm surprised because the Street Pilot series is no longer able to get the latest map updates. I've heard that you can sometimes get a trade in value if you call Garmin Support at 1800-800-1020

If you have lifetime maps, download Garmin Express for Windows or Mac, make sure GPS is fully charged, connect to computer. Let Garmin Express find GPS, do a complete backup, and then do a most recent map update. If you do not have lifetime maps you will have to purchase new maps from Garmin.

The Street Pilot line was one of the first automotive GPS devices from Garmin, and has got to be 8+ years old. Garmin contracts with Navteq for map software. At one point, Garmin needed to have Navteq compress their new maps so that they wouldn't need to increase the amount of memory in the GPS units and still be able to include all the way points, and new features such as junction view, traffic receivers, text to speech voices, etc. These new maps have an "NT" descriptor in the title. "NT "stands for "New Technology". Non-NT maps are no longer produced.

The new Garmin GPS hardware had to included the ability to decompress maps "on the fly" for display on the screen. As a result, the NT maps will not work in the older Garmin devices.

Your best bet is to either use the Street Pilot - knowing that the routes may no longer provide accurate information, or purchase a New, Refurbished or Used GPS. Garmin offers "Lifetime Maps" as an option for nearly all NT capable GPS units either as a subscription after GPS purchase, or "in the box" when buying a Garmin GPS. You'll get FREE map updates for that GPS up to 4 times per year. This assures you of always having the most recent maps available in your GPS. Look for a model that has "LM" in it (ie: nuvi 1490LM). If it has a "T" in the model name (ie: nuvi 1490T), it has Lifetime Traffic. If it is listed as "LMT" (nuvi 1490LMT) it has both Lifetime Maps and Lifetime Traffic.

When your Garmin StreetPilot C330 is connected through your webbrowser - it will show compatible map updates. These can be ordered on DVD or downloaded.

Note that downloading the map update will take a very long time and requires at least 5 Gb of disk space on your PC/Mac. The internet connection needs to be fast and stable enough to complete the huge download. Otherwise its better to order the update through DVD.

Garmin recently introduced this feature in its software updates. I downloaded the update to my nuvi 660 (several years old) last month and it started doing the "ding" which I agree, is most helpful.

Go to www.garmin.com and register your device. You'll be prompted to connect the device via USB and the online garmin updater will step you through updating your device's software.

I thank you for your return message, all I really wanted to do was register my gps's and how to get the update, I had 1 free update on a recent purchase of a 196 and lost it somehow, also I have an older street pilot bought in 2000 which works as well as my 2 new ones but needs an update, anyway I thank you for your comeback. When you say you are clicking on the map, are you just using your mouse pointer to click or have you actually selected the Map Select tool at the top of your Mapsource screen?

The only way to update the maps is to purchase new maps from Garmin and download them via the computer. The 2008 map updates are currently available, and Garmin has told me new maps will be out in a few months.

The instruction manual is available to download from Garmin's website, www.garmin.com. Click on the StreetPilot C330, then go to updates and downloads. You should find the manual there.
