For some people ME was great, for me it was ME= Mistake Emulator. XP has been the best platform Microsoft put out. I would recoment going to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316639/
follow the steps to see if your machine can handle it.
New computers are more affordable and come with Vista. Ocassionaly you can find one with XP. Look for the ones that say Xp - Vista ready. They have more memory and Hard drive space on them and XP runs great. If you want to upgrade. google the price for XP. Dirvers for your machine are the hardest part to find. Buying a XP-Vista ready computer would be the easiest route.

Is there any other OS that is compatible with windows 7? All of my software is for my Vista. Is ther anything else I can do to make my OS more compatible?

Programs released before the market release of Windows 7 are most likely XP and Vista compatible only. What I recommend is to check the websites of those programs for available updates or upgrades. Newer versions of software are Windows 7 compatible.

Tip

Windows Installation Disc VS Windows Upgrade Disc -NOT THE SAME-

Having Trouble Booting To Your Windows Upgrade Disc?

...Upgrade discs aren't bootable discs. To repair a windows installation, you must use either a system repair disc or, better yet, a windows installation disc (genuine Retail/OEM discs are pretty much your only option to completely reinstall your windows operating system, unless you own a previous full installation disc of a previously released Windows version (such as XP or Vista), in which case you could install that windows operating system and then upgrade to a newer windows OS like windows 7. however if you ever need to reinstall windows 7, you would either need to reinstall the older windows OS, then upgrade to the newer one.

If that isn't clear, I'll sum it up....

Let's say you bought a computer, that computer had windows xp home edition. Maybe you wanted to upgrade from Windows XP/Windows Vista or Windows 7?
Well in order to switch from Windows XP/Vista to Windows 7, (or even from Windows 7 home premium- to windows7 Pro or Ultimate), then you must either:
A) Buy an upgrade disc and upgrade to the newer desired version.
B) Or, Buy a Retail Copy of the version you want to install. (keep in mind that a retail Windows 7 disc can be used to perform an upgrade rather than to competely wipe the hard disc and perform a clean install (delete partitions, reformat, and perform a new windows installation), if you so choose.

The bottom line is, you cannot Install a fresh clean copy of windows using an upgrade disc. OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and Retail Windows Operation System Installation Setup Discs are "Bootable Discs". Windows Upgrade Discs are NOT bootable. (unless one where to "modify that particular disc, which is not legal).

How could i get windows vista into my windows xop for free

Unless your PC is fairly new you will not be able to run Windows Vista in the first place even if you could get a legal copy of it for free which I know of no way of doing. Go here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx and see if your PC will even run Vista. The upgrade advisor will tell you if your PC can even run Vista. You have XP which is a stable OS after many years of updates. My advice is to stay as you are until you buy a new PC. When you do purchase Windows 7 and forget Vista. I just upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 and it is superior to Vista hands down.

Have widows xp do i need windows vista

Hi,

Windows Xp and Vista are 2 different Operating system. If we compare both, XP is still far better than Vista. But, if we talk about security, Vista is more secure than XP.

So, it depends on user to user.

I would still prefer XP.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Windows XP verses Vista

Windows XP is much more stable than Vista. You will also have to purchase more memory if you decide to go with Vista. So many people as for XP over Vista that Dell and HP have started offering it as a default option. As far as upgrading goes, it is pretty much inevitable that at some point you will have to upgrade your Operating System. Windows 7 is the next one coming out.

Hope this helps. If you have further questions feel free to reply.

Upgrade

It depends on the model and it's capabilities. Most machine designed for or that have Windows 98 on them are only upgradable to Windows XP. Some don't have the capabilities to run XP, and none of them have the capabilities to Vista. If you will post the make, model, hard drive size, and the amount of memory of your laptop, I'll be able to tell you if it's upgradeable, what is required for the upgrade, and the approx cost.

Windows Vista Upgrade?

This may be because the vista you have has not been registered or it is an upgrade from xp.

Vista doesn't have an upgrade yet, you can upgrade from xp, but not from vista. So this problem is wierd. Get in touch with Best Buy and let them solve the problem.
