Question about Gateway GT4022 PC Desktop

2 ATX POWER SUPPLY PLUGS

Why is there 2x 4 pin ATX power plugs. One that piggybacks on the main plug and one like the Pentium fan plug. They both say 12v ATX. The reason i ask is that when i first went out. the one that was on the main plug was not connected.

Some motherboard/cpu setups require an additional 4-pin connector for additional power on the motherboard. The motherboard will require either a 20-pin or a 24-pin power connector (main power), and might need the additional 4 pin as well. If the motherboard will accept the additional 4-pin, then connect it!

Why wont my computer turn on no lights but fan starts


Replace power supply with an other unit. Power supply differences AT the very old PCs of DOS only and start of windows area. ATX start off Pentium 3 area. ATX with added 4 plug for power of CPU control. New power plug for motherboard of Pentium 4 Birth. Power supply still giving old ata hard drive power only. Addition of Sata power connections/ and now the deletion of the old ata power connections fully from power units.

The power supply light is flashing and my computer won't start up. No fan, nothing. I disconnected the power to the mother board and the light burned solid when plugged in. I have switched the watts...


Bad Power Supply.
Weak voltage power rail, or rails.
{There are three voltage power rails.
1) The 3.3 Volt power rail
2) The 5 Volt power rail
3) The 12 Volt power rail}

The flashing Green LED light is one direct indication of this for HP computers.
Usually there is at least enough power to light LED lights, and spin fans, but your Power Supply doesn't even have that much power.

1) All of the LED lights on at once use less than 1 Watt of power
2) EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts of power
3) A typical Processor can use 51 to 125 Watts of power.
Depends on what Processor it is.

The HP Pavilion A847C desktop computer has an ATX power supply, with a maximum rated wattage of 250 Watts.

The ATX form factor for a Power Supply refers to it's case size, for one.
5-1/2 inches Long, 3-1/2 inches Tall, and 6 inches Wide
The common type of Power Supply used in over 80 percent of PC computers out there, and readily available all over.

The replacement Power Supply has to have,

A) A 24-pin ATX main power cable.
In the motherboard photo, view the Ram Memory slots. The long Blue, and Black slots.

To the right of the bottom corner of the Black ram slot (Slot 4) is a whitish connector.
Two columns of 12 socket holes.
This is where the 24-pin ATX main power cable plugs into.

NOTE the Lock Clip on the side of the connector.


B) 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable.
At the bottom Left corner of the Processor socket is a whitish square connector.
4 socket holes.
This is where the 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable plugs into.

NOTE the Lock Clip on the side of the connector.

{The top of the Lock Clip is squeezed in to release it, and is held while the power cable is removed.
Same for the 24-pin ATX main power cable's connector}


C) SATA power cable.
Used for the SATA harddrive

The SATA power cable has 15 pins, and is the longer connector.
The SATA data cable has 7 pins, and is the shorter connector.

IF, the SATA harddrive has provisions for plugging in a SATA power cable, AND a 4-pin standard Peripheral power cable, ONLY USE the SATA power cable.
Otherwise you will burn up the SATA harddrive.

The SATA power cable plugs into the SATA harddrive.
One end of the SATA data cable plugs into the motherboard, and the other end plugs into the SATA harddrive.

Below the ram slots in the bottom Right corner are the SATA headers on the motherboard, that the SATA harddrive plugs into.
The Blue, Orange, Black and White connectors.

Of course the SATA harddrive only plugs into one of them.
Looking at the motherboard illustration you will see they are numbered.
SATA 1, SATA 2, SATA 3, and SATA 4.

IT DOESN'T MATTER which one you plug your harddrive into. (Or any SATA device)
That's the beauty of SATA.
BIOS will find the harddrive.
But for you, it will be easier to keep track of where the SATA harddrive is plugged in, if you just use SATA 1.

D) 4-pin standard Peripheral power cable.
Commonly referred to as Molex. (Misnomer)

Used for optical drives, Fans, and other associated hardware.

E) 4-pin Small Peripheral power cable.
Used to be commonly used for a Floppy Drive.
For your computer it provides power to the Memory Card Reader.

Watch disconnecting, and connecting this connector. You can bend the pins very easily.
SAFETY
WATCH your fingers as the pins are QUITE SHARP!

All of the power cables listed above are standard for today's Power Supply's.

About the Wattage.
A computer ONLY uses the power it needs, and NO more.

If you put a 10,000 Watt power supply in, and the computer only needed 100 watts for what it is doing, it will ONLY use 100 watts.
To wit, if you install a Power Supply with more Wattage than 250 Watts, it will NOT hurt your computer.

Would help if I had the computer manufacturer's name, and the Model number.

Generic Info:

A) Main power cable:
You may have an old computer which has an AT power supply.
This type of power supply has 2 main power cables.

Example:

NOTE the lock tabs on the side of the connectors. The connectors only go one way.
NOTE the Black wires in both connectors.

When both connectors are plugged in properly, the Black wires in both connectors face each other.
Look at the photo to the far right.
(The Black wires are Ground wires)

B) Newer computers past the time period of the above, use an ATX power supply. They use an ATX main power cable.

First there was a 20-pin ATX main power cable.
As time proceeded, and more power was needed to the motherboard, the 24-pin ATX main power cable came out.

20-pin ATX main power cable, and it's respective connector,

NOTE the lock tab on the side of the connector. It operates in the same fashion as a see-saw on a playground.

The top of the lock tab is pressed in. The hook on the bottom of the lock tab, catches on a protrusion coming out of the side of the connector, on the motherboard.

When plugging in the Lock Tab faces the 'bump', or protrusion on the connector on the motherboard.

Scroll down the page for info on the 24-pin ATX main power cable, and it's respective connector.
With either style of connector, ensure that the ATX main power cable's connector, is pushed down in the connector on the motherboard. Ensure that the Lock Tab is locked into position.

3) 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable.
Also referred to as P4 MB, (Pentium 4 MotherBoard), and P4 12V
(Pentium 4 12 Volt)

This power cable is power for the Processor.
The respective connector on the motherboard, is a square whitish plastic connector with four socket holes.
As shown on the photo to the far Left.

Different manufacturers place the female connector in different places, but it is always located somewhere near the Processor.

4) Standard 4-pin Peripheral power cable:
Also misnomered as a Molex connector.

[Name of first design stuck. Same as calling an adjustable open-end wrench a Crescent wrench]

This power cable is used for IDE, (PATA) harddrives, optical drives, (CD/DVD drive/s), and sometimes for computer case fans.
Note the rounded corners on one side of the connector.
Only allows installing in one direction.
(Unless you 'gorilla' it)

5) SATA power cable:

Used for SATA harddrives, and optical drives that are SATA.
Only plugs in one direction.

NOTE*
Sometimes a SATA harddrive, will have a provision for a standard 4-pin Peripheral power cable, AND a SATA power cable.

ONLY plug in the 15-pin SATA power cable!
I cannot stress this enough.

Plugging in both power cables will BURN up the SATA harddrive.
May not happen right away, but I assure you it WILL happen.

5) Floppy drive power cable:

This is another style of 4-pin Peripheral power cable. A smaller version.
Your computer may not have a Floppy Drive, and hence may not use this power cable.
If you have a Card Reader though, it uses this style of power cable.

Only plugs in, in one direction.
{NOTE*
Watch the sharp pointed pins coming out of a Floppy Drive, or Card Reader, that this power cable plugs onto!
Will stick your finger as easily as a straight pin! ]

My evolution 3000 been occasionally powering down for no apparent reason for a couple of weeks. now completely died. no power at all. won't switch on or show any life.


Power Supply's have a Form Factor. (Actually only motherboards do, but most Power Supply's follow the motherboard Form Factor)

The ATX designation determines it's size, shape, and factors concerning the various power cables coming out of it, (Spaghetti), plus other concerns.

An ATX power supply shape is generally close to 6 inches long, (15.24 Centimeters), 6 inches wide, and 3-1/2 inches tall.
(8.89 Centimeters)

It is the common size and shape used for 90 percent of the personal computers made, out there.

From what I have been reading about Evesham, they used typical power supply cables used for most ATX power supply's.

Basic specifications on the Evesham Evolution 3000 desktop computer,

Power Cables:

1) Don't know if the Power Supply will have a 20-pin ATX main power cable, or a 24-pin ATX main power cable.

In reality the point is moot, because new power supply's have a main power cable which will be a 20-pin connector, or a become a 24-pin connector.

Install power supply


Relative easy. Open up the case and be careful to see what wires are connect. Replace each one carefully. There is the big wire that containes a bundle. This goes to the motherboard. There is only one way to install it. There is a 4 prong molex wire that goes to the hard drive. There are extra wires just in case you need to add another hard drive for example. There shoudl be 4 screws holding the power supply in place. Remove them from the back of the PC

Need to know what parts compatable to ATX-1523D for an emachines T-1090


It's a Small Form Factor power supply.
4.9 inches Wide, 2.5 inches Tall, and 3.9 inches Long.

Put's out a maximum of 150 watts, (Supposedly)
Has the following power cables;

A) (1) 20-pin ATX main power cable:

(The connector on the end of the power cable, is referred to as a standard 4-pin Molex connector. This is a misnomer. Molex was/is, a company that made this style of connector first. The name Molex was on the connector. The name stuck with people. It's just like referring to an open end adjustable wrench, as a Crescent Wrench)

Except for the size, and shape of this power supply, just about any low-end ATX power supply with a 4-pin +12 Volt power cable, would work.

Power supply installation in gateway 610xl


to replace a standard ATX powersupply;

remove left hand side cover (ensure power is disconnected first);
disconnect the 20.24 pin primary power plug (big wide white one plugs directly onto the mainboard, also disconnect the 4 pin AUX power plug, looks just like the other one but is a smaller square shaped plug (older P3 boards will not have this)

disconnect all 4 pin power plugs from hard drives/cd drives and aftermarket fans (if any are installed), disconnect SATA power plugs from any SATA devices installed (flat black plug, 4 wires)

disconnect floppy drive power plug (if app) small while 4 pin power plug, once all of these are disconnected, looking at the rear of the computer there will be 4 screws holding the power supply in place, one screw will be more to the centre slightly to ensure you do not put it in upside down, once you remove those screws the power supply will slide right out.. simply re-do these steps in revers for instaling the new power supply
