- Actually, my norton anti-virus free trial just expired, and I have no protection right now. Do you think it's a virus? And, should I purchase and re-new my norton subscription?

Hi,

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".

Often device failure in a laptop would be a driver problem as in your concern of no sound. It is very rare for the sound hardware to go bad specially in a Sony.

Even if there are no problems (yellow or red marks) under the "Sound, video and game controllers" in your Device Manager, it is possible that:
  • IRQ conflict. Pls verify that the IRQ assigned to the sound device is not shared;
  • multiple instance/installation of the sound driver. Verify in Device Manager, View tab, Show hidden devices. If there are any multiple drivers/installation as indicated by #?, delete/uninstall all duplications and reboot;
  • if a clean/fresh/single install of the driver would not be corrective, then in some extreme cases, a re-install of the OS may be required;
  • as earlier stated, hardware rarely go bad but do occasionally. The correct procedure would be a replacement of the motherboard, an alternate workaround is to install a USB ported sound card. There are even some USB keyboards with built-in sound device such as the IP-Talky (KIP800) of A4 Tech.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back the exact model number of the Sony, how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

- Hi again,

Curious that it comes and go, initially, pls try to do a deep virus scan. Additionally, there are online virus scanner. Download, install and run Ad-Aware.
