Re: No sound on my sony computer
Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".
Often device failure in a laptop would be a driver problem as in your concern of no sound. It is very rare for the sound hardware to go bad specially in a Sony.
Even if there are no problems (yellow or red marks) under the "Sound, video and game controllers" in your Device Manager, it is possible that:
IRQ conflict. Pls verify that the IRQ assigned to the sound device is not shared;
multiple instance/installation of the sound driver. Verify in Device Manager, View tab, Show hidden devices. If there are any multiple drivers/installation as indicated by #?, delete/uninstall all duplications and reboot;
if a clean/fresh/single install of the driver would not be corrective, then in some extreme cases, a re-install of the OS may be required;
as earlier stated, hardware rarely go bad but do occasionally. The correct procedure would be a replacement of the motherboard, an alternate workaround is to install a USB ported sound card. There are even some USB keyboards with built-in sound device such as the IP-Talky (KIP800) of A4 Tech.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back the exact model number of the Sony, how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Take it to the Service center. need to replace the headphone output connector's. these will happen from Moistor,Dirt block or Dry solder in the Laptop Motherboard. best of luck. ( Try, put headphone jack in and out for 20 to 30 times, or check the sound comes out via headphone, when pressing the connected jack.) best of luck
I've just brought on too, I thought the same thing, have to use headphones or hook it up to a speaker otherwise I strain to hear anything. Was also disappointed to find no Media Controller software pre-installed. Overall love this portable computer.
ok me too, since i install the win 7 in my sony vgn-fz15g, the sound is also coming from speaker too while headphone is connected, and earlier in vista it disable the speaker automatically, i check the sound window, in win7 speaker/headphone is given together, i can not disable one at a time, i think its a driver problem, sony customer care people told me that they have still not tested this model on windows 7 so thats why they are not releasing the driver, if any one have the link for he latest sigmatel high definition driver then let me know that, because this is the complete problem
Start- Control panel- Sounds and Audio Devices- In the device volume section click Advanced- Click Advanced again and check if In the other controls section 1 PC Spk mute is checked if so uncheck it If that does not work please let me know so I can help you further
