DSC-M1 (or MPEG4) playback on TV

Hi all, I've owned a DSC-M1 since end of December '05 and have recorded quite a few MPEG4 clips and have primarily played back on my Mac which has been fine. Recently I burned some clips to DVD and played back on my TV and the quality is actually pretty disappointing. The video looked blocky and distorted...not really sharp. I wouldn't expect it to be as clear as a DV camcorder but still not that bad. Last week I purchased the Sanyo Xacti C5 and the playback was just as bad. I've got a plasma 50" so I'm not certain if that's the cause, i.e. it may look better on a 32" CRT? If this is normal, then I may consider switching back to a DV camcorder. Cheers, Sean

Re: DSC-M1 (or MPEG4) playback on TV

The resolution is too high... in DVD ( MPEG2) format you are up-converting an MPEG4 image to MPEG2. moreover, the images are designed for playback at 640 x 480 so as you increase the play-back resolution, the quality will become worse. I would have thought newer LCD/plasma sets would automoatically recognize the native resolution and play back in 640 x 480 and am a bit surprised that such sets do not automatically configure to the best display....

Re: DSC-M1 (or MPEG4) playback on TV

I've done fairly extensive video....soccer & basketball...........editing and burning using ULEAD Video Studio 8 and its MPEG4 plug-in......and burned to DVD............playing on a 27 inch T.V., the playback quality is much better than I expected...... Playing back the native file on a computer LCD seems to produce artifacting...but I've concluded that is more a result of the response time of the LCD....usually LCD are fairly slow....newer LCDs are better.....

Re: DSC-M1 (or MPEG4) playback on TV

Hello, You spoke about burning a DVD. Have you tried connecting directly your M1's TV out (yellow jack) to your TV set? If the quality level is same in direct connection using the MS as original carrier as with the DVD then "ite missa est", otherwise there is an issue with the DVD burning like reencoding of mpeg4 into mpeg2, maybe some quality parameters to tweek in a remote menu....

No sound

You will get sound when you transfer recorded movie clips in your computer and playback in computer.
DSC-S500 Sony Cybershot has built-in mic to record sound but doesn't have speaker to give sound during playback in camera. You need to import movie files in your PC and playback in PC to hear sound.

No sound on movie playback

This camera does record sounds. But, it doesnt look like it has a speaker in it to play them. So, yes unfortunately you wont be able to hear what you record unless you are using something else to playback what you have recorded.

Good Luck.
