Question about Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W1 Digital Camera

Camera making strange noise

I got my camera about half a year ago, and since that time everything have worked just perfect. Today I took it to take some shots and I noticed something weird. When the camera is turned on it makes a strange noice, something like scratching inside. It appears only when the live view is on and the lens is extended ready to shoot. When I preview the pictures it doesn't make any sound, only when I'm about to shoot or make movie. It's a very quiet sound (you have to put the camera against your ear in order to hear it) and I'm not sure if it really is something extraordinary, so could you check out your cams if they make that sound? Everything works just like before, pictures are sharp and movies are well recerded too, but I'm concerned if there isn't anything bad happening with my camera. It didn't face any extreme conditions such as snow or water. I'd really appreciate your help! Karol

Re: camera making strange noise

Sounds like the focus mechanism, your camera will be a very light sound while focusing. this is totally normal and nothing is wrong with your camera the sound is a good thing it makes sure your photos are in focus :)

I have a Casio Exilim EX-Z33 and i dropped it a while ago and it continued to work (kind of, the images were a bit blurry). i took a picture five minutes ago and then turned it off. the lens went in but...

Sounds like the focus motor came loose - you need to take it apart and repair the gear that drives the lens assembly for focusing. The noise you're hearing is the motor trying to focus but since the lens cannot focus it continues to run and signals an error.

Olympus FE 230 Problem

I had the same problem. I hit it a long time ago when it did it for the first time. It has been a year since then and it is doing it again. I tried the book solution again and it will not work. I tried holding the lens, no luck, and I tried applying pressure when the lens went back in, again, no luck. Honestly, I don't think I will buy another Olympus fe series camera again. The solutions provided do help the first few times your camera does it, but you might want to start checking the market for a new camera.

A black shadow half way down the frame

2 cent plastic pin holding AF sub-mirror broke. See above. Unfortunately Canon charges a bit above 2 cents to fix it. Saving pennies on plastic instead of metal will make Canon a boatload of money because they will all break eventually. Of course if everyone changes manufacturer on their next camera this might backfire.

Lcd reads system error

Apparently often related to a lens motor malfunction. My old 4300 just gave this error for the first time today. The lens extended but made a whirring noise before the message popped up. Nothing I tried would fix it - but after I drove home it worked fine again.

I had a similar problem over a year ago after the camera fell out of my backpack (it was in its own bag but not well padded). When I used it the lens stuck and refused to retract, but I don't recall a "System Error" message. After a few tries, the lens went in and it's been fine since, until today.

Make sure there's nothing (dust, dirt) stuck in the lens barrels. Otherwise, just keep turning it on and off and hope it works.

This is the lens focus gears. They are either knocked out of alignment, or debris has jammed them.

Nikon D70 - err - won't take picture

Today I was taking photos and the camera quit...the top display says err. The book says release shutter, but I push the shutter and it does nothing but make a little click and the err stays. I took the lens off, and the camera does look like the shutter is open or something.

Check the Kodak website Tech support, It does seem that there is a switch fault or internal short here.
