Question about Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W1 Digital Camera

W1- Inside Catherdral

Last week I had the pleasure of touring the beautiful city of Rome, Italy & marvelling at the beauty inside of all the cathedrals. Just getting the W1, I had to experiment with the different setting on the camera to get a decent picture - Without going into the MANUAL mode, I selected Candlelight mode., but yet they turned out to have a yellowish to orange tone in them. Not satisfying. can anyone help me with this so I can get more natural colors under these conditions??? Thanks Bill

Re: W1- Inside Catherdral

Bill, I don't have a W1 and I've never heard of a Candlelight preset but it sounds rather gimmicky and highly arbitrary -- you're at the mercy of the designers' whim here. They could intend a white balance which deems a typical candle flame to be "white", or they could have set out deliberately to provide a WB that evokes a warm and cozy mood even with flash. Who knows... If the cathedral is lit mainly by daylight coming in the windows, then you may want to record things much as you see them, in which case a Daylight WB setting would be preferable. If it's artificially lit then Incandescent may be as close as you'll get, though it will depend on the actual lighting in use. If it's discharge type lighting -- a mercury variant or high pressure sodium, then anything can happen. If the camera has it, Manual (custom) WB will always be the most accurate in odd lighting situations. That doesn't help with what you already have on file, but any reasonably comprehensive image editing software will allow you to shift the overall hue of what you've recorded. The best way to start is to reference the image's grey (midpoint) setting to some neutral object in the shot, and the stonework in a church should give you plenty of targets to try (you usually have to poke around a bit till it looks right. The general technique is described at the following link for Photoshop (I suggest you use the Levels dialog), while PS Elements has its own dedicated WB tool which is a bit easier to use.

If you are taking the photo inside with artificial lighting then this will affect the colors.
Try taking the photo of the painting with outside lighting.

We are now on our 3rd 5.0 bushnell night sentry camera and the night pictures are black. With the second camera, we might get the first picture where the flash goes off, but the subsequent ones are black....

OK, I think that this is a problem with the flash not working correctly, and you are within the warranty period, I'm hoping, so that you can get it replaced.

Power shouldn't be an issue since you have a solar panel.

Pictures are to dark

In order to adjust the ISO; please go into the Menu (Capture+ tab) and set the ISO for 64, 100 or 200 in order to reduce the darkness. However this will lead to slower shutter speeds in low light.

Also try different SCN and ISO to see if problem still persists.
If the problem is intermitted, try to find a pattern in to when the faulty pictures appear.

Hi i got a D70S Nikon camera but i wanted to know where i could get a charger for it please.

You can find them on ebay, and most of the electronic stores (Best Buy, Ckt City, etc.) sell a charger that will charge many different batteries. Just look for EN-EL3, which is the battery in the D70.

Lens will not retract

I have exactly the same problem and I found out that new batteries solve the problem. I also think the battery charger bundled with the W12 version is not very good. You might try (I haven't yet!) a new charger which handles new types of batteries (Ni-MH).

NO FLASH

When you dropped it one of the circuit boards inside may have cracked, or one of the connections may have severed. This could be potentially dangerous, since the flash circuit accumulates 300 to 500 volts! I would have it checked, but if it's not real new and/or under, say US$150-200, it probably won't be worth fixing. You can check the manufacturer's website for service options.
