Question about Philips GoGear SA178 MP3 Player

1 Answer

How do you defrag your go gear?

I have selected "My Computer" and have found "Removable Disk" field in the "Device with Removable Storage". Then I click Right mouse's button and get a menu. This menu has field "Format...". I select it. Menu disappears and nothing happens.

Could you suggest another way for disk defragmentation, please?

    Yes, I have try to reload firmware by doing an Update in Philips Device Manager. During the updating procedure I have received a message "Device update failed" (after that the same message have appeared when I try to recover player). As a result any PC do not see player at all. When I connect player to PC the player's display do not light up. Display light up only when I try to recovery player again using Philips Firmware Manager. But if I try to obtain go gear's properties (right button click) I get full disk space = 0 Byte as well as free disk space = 0 Byte.

    In the Internet I have known sach problems sometimes appear for usual flash disks. And people in that case try to find program which can format their disks. So I have decide defrag my player because I have no any other idea now.

You don't need to defrag this, nor can you.  By clicking the format button, you erased the player's native format. Try reloading the firmware by doing an Update in Philips Device Manager.

    If you received the "device update failed" message, then you might want to consider replacing the player. You would have to reload ALL system files/folders in the GoGear, and I have not yet found anyone who knows how to do it for this model. Sorry to hear about the trouble.

Connecting the player before a media software program is installed, the player will connect as a flash drive also called removable disk in MSC mode.
There are 2 settings for connection mode in the player, MTP and MSC.
See page 36 of the manual for more information and how to set the USB mode:

WITH SERVICE PACK 3 (WIN XP) MY 795 IS "DISCONNECTED" NO MATTER WHAT! PLEASE HELP!!

The iFP-795 is a player that has connection type UMS
(also called MSC): seeing the player as a removable disk:
Go to next site to see the connection type:
http://www.iriver.com/flash/index.asp?code=0300
and click on connection. Scroll down to see the iFP-700 series listed in the connection type UMS.
UMS = Universal Mass Storage
MSC = Mass Storage Class

With XP sp3 the computer Operating System has setup USB connections with new drivers, that support both UMS (= MSC) and MTP connections.
MTP = Media Transfer Protocol

When you experience next making connection:
Connecting the device to the computer Wizard found new hardware pops up.
Only this time the Windows update searching for software will not work on automatic routine: ending up with "Cannot Install this Hardware".

Registering my camera

Make sure the camera is on and pc is selected on the camera screen when connected to the computer. You will need to have PC highlighted and select ok on the camera as this starts the camera and computer to communicate. Once communication established the LCD screen of the camera goes dark and the computer should generate a removable disk drive. Check the System Tray (lower right corner beside the PC time) for Safely Remove Hardware. When you click on it, it should read "Safely Remove USB Mass Storage Device Drive ?:" If you dont see that, then check the Device Manager to see if the camera is recognized as USB Mass Storage Device. The camera uses the driver usbstor.

How do I get started using a USB flash drive and how do I set up a security system?

hey, heres something that would help u:  Copying files to a flash drive on a PC:
  1. Open My Computer and see which drives are shown. Most computers, for example, have a hard disk such as a C: drive and a few removable storage devices such as a floppy drive, a CD-ROM drive, and perhaps a zip drive.
  2. Insert the flash drive into the USB port and watch to see where the USB flash drive appears. Most will appear as removable storage, but some will instead appear as hard drives. Note the name Windows is using to refer to the flash drive ("Removable Disk (G:)," for example).
  3. Open My Documents or the location from which you want to transfer files to the flash drive. Select the files or folders you want to save to the flash drive by left-clicking on them. To select more than one, hold down the CTRL key while you click and select all of the files you wish to save.
  4. Right-click on the file(s) or folder(s) you selected, then select Send to, then select the name you saw appearing in My Computer for the flash drive ("Removable Disk (G:)," for example).
  5. When the copying is finished, do not immediately remove the flash drive from the USB port. Instead, left-click on the Remove Hardware icon toolbar.gif located in the System Tray. A window containing a list of the USB devices will appear. Left-click on the Safely Remove Mass Storage Device line that matches your flash drive (for example, Safely Remove Mass Storage Device - Drive(G:)).
  6. When you see the following message appear in the bottom left toolbar, it is, as it says, safe to remove the flash drive from the USB port; you may close the message or ignore it, as it will close itself automatically:
