How to reformat laptop

  • 1

If you have the recovery cd, you can just pop-in the CD, select the reformat option and the installation process will continue automatically. Some laptop might have a special partition in the drive contains the operating system, drivers, etc. in case you want to reformat your laptop without the CD.

  • 2

If you don't have the recovery CD, you usually can request one from the manufacturer. Otherwise, if you want to do a clean install, make sure you download all the drivers for your laptop, this may includes: motherboard, chipset, graphic card, sound card, modem, network card. Once you do that, put in the OS CD and start installing.

If you decided to do a clean install without the recovery CD, it would be best to create partition on your harddrive first, so you can have dedicated partition for operating system and backup. The next time you want to reformat your harddrive, you can just reformat that particular partition ex. C:\

    http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9108198/Microsoft_offers_free_Vista_to_XP_downgrade_help
Obviously, the most convenient way to downgrade is to do so without reformatting. In order to do that, you need to have a real retail CD of Windows XP. If all you have is a recovery disk that came with your computer, you’re not going to be able to do it this way. You will need to reformat.
To downgrade, use the following as a guide:
    1. Do a full backup of your current, Vista system. If something happens, you can always revert to the backup.
    2. Boot your computer off the Windows XP disc. Just pop the CD into the CD-ROM and reboot. If, for some reason, your computer boots without looking for the CD drive, you need to go into your system BIOS and change the boot order so that it checks for the CD drive during the boot process.
    3. When the computer asks to press the space bar to boot from the CD, do so.
    4. When Windows XP Setup starts up, press “R” to enter the recovery.
    5. If it asks you to choose a Windows installation, press a number and hit Enter. The likely number will be 1.
    6. If you get asked for an Administrator password, enter when asked. If you do not know it, you will need to abort and go back into Windows Vista to get your password.
    7. At the command prompt, we’re going to use the “fixboot” command. We’ll use the following commands in sequence to prep for XP:
    8. fixboot
      fixmbr
      cd \
      ren windows winvista
      exit

Hi Johnson, I think the best bet would be to reformat your disk and that you need a windows cd or download it from the internet. Are you using Windows XP? This normally happens when you remove a disk from one pc and put it into another pc, it tells you you have a disk error, only with windows XP! Best of luck , Sir John

Hello the hard drive of our laptop needs a full reformat so i can reinstall xp but how do i format it without a working opperating system? thank you

You can do a full reformat right from the windows xp install disk.  Put the xp disk in the cdrom drive and restart the computer.  Upon restarting a message will come up ( Hit any key to boot from CD )  Hit any key,  the files will load then you will be able to format the hard drive and also load windows XP.
If for some reason your system doesnt boot from the cd, you might have to go into the Bios and change the boot order from the hard drive or the floppy to the cd so the computer will boot from the CD first. Hope this helps...                                                           Joe > Data Miner <
