Question about Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W1 Digital Camera

Does the W1 have Nightshot?

Hey everyone, can someone please tell me if the W1 has nightshot mode? There is no review of this camera here on dpr and in the quick spec sheet Phil has put together it doesnt say one way or the other. Also, can you attach filters to the lens if you use an adapter barrel that connects to the camera body?? Thanks.

No image on LCD while all else seems normal.

Sony had a certain issue with the CCD chip on this camera. If it's this issue, they'll fix it free plus $20 until March 2010.

This setting will be in the MENU settings:
  • AiAF: Sets AiAF to On, Off, or activates Face Detection.
  • Digital Zoom: Can be set to Off, 1.5x, 1.9x, or Standard.
  • Slow Synchro: Allows you to shoot with the flash at slow shutter speeds, useful at night.

DSC-F717 - "stucked" in nightshot mode

Yes you are right, it is more than likely the nightshot button that has shorted.

This is button is part of what we call the Switch control Block.

Phone your local Sony service Centre and ask them how much it would cost to replace the switch control block. My estimate is about a 1/5 of the original cast you paid for the camera.

Good luck.

W1 underwater

There is a generic "all-in-one" housing by Equinox that will hold the W1. Very basic controls, altho if you pay more you can get a custom. Haven't heard anyone's reviews on the housing tho. see here, http://www.oceanbrite.com/moreinfo.php?id=498

Does the W1 have infrared abilities?

The Sonys with Nightshot are best at IR, IMHO. The W1 does not have this feature. I imagine it could take IR pics in Manual mode, but the exposures would have to be so long that picture quality would suffer to an unacceptable degree, IMO. The V1 has nightshot, and the price on them has come way down since the V3 was introduced. If you want to get into IR, I suggest a V1.
