We have an IBM ThinkCentre S51 Desktop PC and the computer froze up with a parity error. We restarted it and we would like to know if that will solve the problem for the future.

Parity error pops up when the memory encounters a read error. It may be a one time glitch or a sign of memory failure to come.

'Parity' is a form of error detection that uses a single bit to represent the odd or even quantities of '1's and '0's in the data. Parity usually consists of one parity bit for each eight bits of data.
On most systems, a parity error detection results in the computer system freezing entirely and the displaying of a 'Parity Error' message on the screen. The system must then be restarted.

I would run a memory diagnostic to see if your memory (RAM) is stable.

Download Windows Memory Diagnostics tool, copy it to a CD and run it. There is a User guide to instruct you how to do this.

Hardware Malfunction

Hi there.
Parity check is usually to do with memory due to dust, take the memory out clean the contacts with a soft, clean dry paintbrush and the slots too free of dust, re-seat the memory and your problem should be solved.
post back if you need any more advice.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

Regarding Memory Parity check

this error is usually associated with bad memory cards......how much amount of memory are you using.....try reseating the memory cards(ram)....if you still get the error msg....try starting the system with jst 1 memory (if thr are 2 memory cards installd) & thn swap it with the other one......
