How do i turn off the closed caption on my toshiba 51h84 tv? i tried setting via the remote and changed the CC option to OFF but i still see the closed caption wording...it is driving me crazy!! help!

What is the source of your TV signal: Cable? Dish Networks? DirectTV? Antenna?
Many times the Cable/Dish Networks/DirectTV controller also has an option for closed captioning. Please verify that a controller is not setup to deliver the CC data.
Also, try setting the TV CC using 'C1' or 'T1' and selecting 'Enter' to accept the change; then come back and set CC to 'Off' again to see if toggling on/off helps.

How do i remove the captions off the bottom of the tv with my remote

Be aware that closed captions or CC can come either from the set or a cable or sat box (those have that feature also).

In menu (set or box) look for Closed captions and select off or whatever removes them--some sets/boxes have a option that they only come up when sound is muted.

If you want to prove where it is coming from and have cable--hook it direct to set with no box to see if still there or not--if not it is coming from the box used--go into its menu and turn it off.

Black box covering part of screen

That is coming from the closed captioning. It has been turned on and it is in text mode. The captioning is most likely coming from the television but it can also be coming from your cable box/satellite receiver. Find your television remote's cc button and press it until it says off on your screen. If your remote does not have one closed captioning should be in the menu. If the text box is coming from a cable box there are a couple of ways to disable it not limited to a button on the remote and a hidden menu you can access when turning it off from the on off button directly on it and pressing the menu button located directly on it.

Keep in mind also that closed captioning can also come from your cable box or satellite receiver.

When someone is speaking the words also appear on screen. How do I stop this from happening?

The closed captioning is on. If the source is OTA, you can turn it off with the remote (a button marked CC, press it until it reads CC OFF) or the On-screen Display (probably Options or Tools). This also applies to some satellite or cable systems. With satellite and some cable boxes, the captions can also be controlled by the box. The remote for the box may have a CC button. Otherwise, you'll need to go through the menus to turn it off. (I know with Dish Network boxes, if the system is set to single (rather than dual) mode, both TVs will show the captions if it is enabled.

Similarly, DVDs, VCRs, and Blu-ray inputs may have their own captions and you might need to see the remote (or menus) for that device.

I hope this helps.

How to remove subtitles from sony bravia tv screen

You can download the user manual here.
http://www.retrevo.com/support/Toshiba-57H84-TVs-manual/id/311ag813/t/2/
The closed caption feature has two options:
• Captions—An on-screen display of the dialogue, narration, and sound effects of TV programs and videos that are closed captioned (usually marked as “CC” in TV listings).
• Text—An on-screen display of information not related to the current program, such as weather or stock data (when provided by individual stations).
To view captions or text:
1. Tune the TV to the desired program.
2.Press MENU, and then press x or • to display CUSTOM menu.
3. Press y or z to highlight CC, and then press ENTER.
4. Press y or z to highlight CAPTION or TEXT, and then press Enter.
To turn off the Closed Caption feature:
Highlight OFF in step 4.

I need to activate CC for my Dad, Please help I have to go to work. I have a flat screen SOYO

Determine if closed captioning is available on the program that you've selected. In your program guide, the letters "CC" should appear at the end of the description.
Locate the closed captioning option on your remote. Some remotes have a "CC" button that you simply need to push to activate closed captioning
Locate the closed captioning option in your television's menu if there is no "CC" button on your remote. To do this, push the "menu" button on the remote control. The closed captioning option will probably be in the same section as the language function.
Set the closed captioning option to "on." Within several seconds, you should see the text appear on your screen.
To use closed captioning for DVDs, look for the "CC" label on the lower back section of the DVD case where it lists audio information. Turn on your TV's closed captioning and you should see the captioning like you do on a television program. Alternately, some DVDs include English subtitles that you can turn on in the setup/language menu of the DVD.
Thank you.

Sounds like the closed caption option is active.Check your remote to see if you have a button labeled"CC" that would turn it off and on. If not go into customer menu look for closed caption option turn it off. If you have a cable or satellite box they may also have closed caption option that you can turn off.

New Toshiba 37" flat screen always displays Closed Captions. Feature is turned off with TV remote, feature not available on Cable remote. Toshiba says it is Cable company problem, Mediacom cable can...

I've had this problem for a bit, it seems that there are two ways to turn off the closed captions.
1:Menu--->Preferences--->CC and Digital Audio Selectors. This displays the menu on the bottom of the screen with the choices of Closed Caption formats and digital audio. This is not the correct menu to be in. This turns off the CC as long as the TV is not turned off or the input is not changed. This is a temporarily either turns the CC on or off.
The Solution:
2:Menu--->Setup--->TV Settings--->Closed Captions Settings Displays a menu in the center of the screen, with the options of Turning the Closed Captions on and off, the Analog CC Mode and Digital CC settings. You must turn the Closed Captions off in this menu or the changes to CC are temporary.
For the record:
1. I'm aware I'm 2 years late on this, but I just want others to be able to solve this issue on their Toshiba. Don't worry, my Toshiba is the same age as yours
2. I've lost faith in Tech Support ages ago. I'm sorry that they were that incompetent.
3. Its ridiculous that there are two entirely different menus to alter the closed captions. Took me forever to figure this out.
Hope this helps you and others.

Your closed caption is turned on. Go into the menu and set captions to off or look for captions button on remote. Sometimes identified as cc. Press it until "captions off "appears on screen. That should do it. Good luck.
