Just bought win 7 laptops wont connect to my lexmark x1180 printer connected to my desktop running xp any ideas?

Enable File and Print Sharing on your XP system.
Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click Printers
Enable "sharing' for the printer.

Click Start
Right-mouse click My Computer
Click Properties
Click Computer Name
to show the current "workgroup" name on your XP system.

On the Windows 7 system:
Configure it into the same workgroup.
Then, "Add Network Printer", connecting to your XP system, and pointing at the shared printer.

I have 2 computers and 1 hp printer. i am trying to print with both computers to the one printer. we have an internet router and both of us are online using it. we have ethernet cables coming from it to...

If you're using "XP" these are the steps to get you started, if it's Vista, it should be similar, but I'm not familiar enough to know exactly:
To setup network:
Open "control panel"
Select network setup wizard"
"welcome screen" opens, select "next"
Make sure other PC is on and Click "next" again
Select "this computer connects to the internet through a residential gateway....." click "next"
Type in "description" and "name' (it's up to you) click 'next"
Type a workgroup name or use default "MSHOME"...NOTE: this needs to be THE SAME on the other PC when you perform these settings there.
on the next screen, slect "turn on file and printer sharing", click "next", click "next. select "just finish the wizard..."
Restart the computer, then do this on the other PC

Printer sharing:
connect the printer to one of the PC's and install driver if it's not already, during the install you will be prompted whether to "share" or not slect "share and name it.
NOW.....to connect form the other PC.....go to "printer/faxes", "add printer", click 'next" select "a network printer...." click 'next"
select "browse for printer"
in the larger box it may just show the printer, or you may see "Microsoft windows network", if so click on it, then select your network (IE: MSHOME") and now you should see the printer. Double click it, and that should do it.

I hope this does it for you, if so, please, please rate my solution :)

Can the brother mfc 7820 be used on a wireless network

So, you want to share a printer from a desktop computer to wireless clients. I am assuming you are using Windows XP on the desktop computer. If that is not the case, let me know if you cannot figure out corresponding steps for your operating system.

With Windows sharing, the first thing is to make certain you have all computers in the same workgroup and assign them different manes. To do this:

1. RIGHT click on 'My Computer' (either on the desktop if it is there or in the start menu).
2. Select 'Properties.'
3. Click on 'Computer Name.'
4. Click 'Change.'
5. In computer name, type a name for each computer (perhaps 'desktop' and xx-laptop, replacing xx with your initials); it doesn't matter what you put here, they just cannot be the same on any two computers.
6. Make certain the workgroup radio button is selected and type a workgroup name. The workgroup name must be the same on all computers to make this work easily. Anything will do. Common chioces are your last name, 'workgroup', and 'mshome'.
7. Click 'ok' and 'ok' and allow your computer to reboot if you changed anything. Remember to do this on the desktop and all the computers you are going to use the printer with, too.

Now, we need to set up sharing on the desktop. I am assuming that the printer works from the desktop without problem. You have probably already done the following, but check it to be sure:
1. Open the printer dialog (Start-->Printers and Faxes OR if that isn't there Start-->Control Panel-->Printers and Faxes).
2. Right click the printer you want to share.
3. Select 'Sharing'.
4. Assign a share name.

Finally, on the laptop you need to set up the printer:
1. Go to 'My Network Places' (one way is by opening 'My Computer' and clicking 'My Netowrk Places' at the left.
2. Select the name you gave to the desktop (if this is not here, we will need to troubleshoot other parts of your network).
3. The shared printer should show up.
4. RIGHT click on the printer and select 'Install/Connect'.
5. If it asks for a driver, provide the driver file.
6. Print something ;)

Network printe on vista

Accessing a Shared Printer To access a shared printer from a computer running Windows Vista, do the following:
  1. Click Start, and then click Network. The Network window displays a list of computers in the workgroup of the computer.
  2. Double-click the name of the computer containing the shared printer that you want to access.
  3. Right-click the shared printer that you want to access, and then click Connect. Alternately, you can double-click on Printers to see just the list of shared printers, and then right-click the shared printer that you want to access, and then click Connect.
After you have connected to the shared printer, you will be able to print to this shared printer as long as the printer and the computer sharing the printer are turned on.

please note that in network the computer that has the network printer if it is running XP may take as long as 15minutes to be recognized.

HP 3100 LaserJet All-in-one Print Driver for Vista OS

It doesn't work in share mode either...It prints the pages incorrectly. I have the hp3100 connected to my xp pc and my vista laptop connects to it via printer sharing on my network. the xp prints fine but the vista doesn't print ok due to lack of driver support for it.

I have to resort to print to pdf and then take the pdf to my xp for printing. Its a half *** solution but if anybody out there made his/her own driver please post.
