Thier are 2 possible things causing the timer not to advance(without knowing the model# i am assuming it does have a timer as oppesed to a touchpad/electronic control)

1) the timer motor is defective and it isn't advancing to the next cycle..to repair that the timer needs to be replaced

2) IF EQUIPPED on your model..the part called the energy option switch is bad and it needs to be replaced...GE/Hotpoint dishwashers used this energy option switch on several models and when it was bad it would not send power to the timer.

If your model has a energy option switch i would highly suspect that as being the problem

Check the rinse aid indicator beside the rinse aid dispenser cap. If the indicator window is clear, refill the dispenser. The dishwasher will retain moisture and the heat dry option will not perform properly without rinse aid. Turn the dispenser cap clockwise and lift it up to remove it. Pour rinse aid into the dispenser until the indicator appears full. Place the dispenser cap over the dispenser and turn it counterclockwise to tighten it.

Load the dishes properly so that all dishes can drain after the rinse cycle. Do not overload the dishwasher. Towel-dry plastic dishes because they will not dry completely during the dry cycle.

Select the heated dry option on the dishwasher. The air-dry and energy-saving dry options will not perform as well as the heated dry.

Check to make sure there are no bits or trash or paper around the bottom parts of your dishwasher. Place a bowl of vinegar on the bottom rack of your empty dishwasher. Run your dishwasher through a complete cycle.
