How to Know if a Computer Has a Wireless Networking Card?

I'm not 100% but think that quite simply if nothing shows up under the wireless connectivity options and you are in range of a known wifi netowrk, then possibly not.

On a PC you can go to "control panel" then "system" "device manager". Then look under "Network Adapters" and expand the list of adapters. Look for "wireless," "802.11," "WLAN" or "Wi-Fi" anywhere in the list.

If that is there then you have a wireless adapter installed and will be able to connect to a known network if there is a networking card present.

The other possibilty is you have a card but you have no way to see the local network. if this is the case then card is damaged or the connection to the card is damaged, which sometimes occurs in laptops from being bumped around.

How to setup a Wireless Network

1. <b>Connect Your Wireless Router</b> <br /><b>a.</b> Power off your cable modem and your wired PC.<br /><b>b.</b> Unplug the Ethernet cable from your cable/DSL modem and plug it into one of the LAN ports on the back of the wireless router. Leave other end of the cable connected to your PC.<br /><b>c.</b> Connect another Ethernet cable between your modem's Ethernet port and the wireless router's WAN port. (The WAN port should be separate from the other grouped LAN ports.)<br /><b>d.</b> Power on the modem and watch for the status lights to indicate that it's connected to your Internet service. This may take a minute or so.<br /><b>e.</b> Plug in the router. The status lights will blink as it runs through its diagnostics; this may also take a minute or so.<br /><b>f.</b> Start up your wired PC.<br />2. <b>Configure your Wireless Router</b><br /><b>a.</b> Refer to the router's quick-start guide, launch Internet Explorer, and type in the address indicated in the guide.<br /><b>b.</b> Follow the on-screen setup wizard, which will guide you through the process step by step.<br /><b>c.</b> Enable your router's security functions. This is very important if you don't want other people attaching to your wireless signal. The options will be WEP and WPA. Both will ask you to enter a key. Depending on the router's manufacturer, you may have to go into Advanced Settings to accomplish this step.<br /><b>d.</b> Change the default administrator's password, Almost all hackers know them.<br /><b>e.</b> Change the SSID-the name of your wireless network. Again, hackers know many of the default SSIDs and can use them to hack your network.<br />3. <b>Install a Wireless PCI Card in a Desktop PC</b> <br /><b>a.</b> Refer to the card manufacturer's quick-start guide. If necessary, run the software installation program.<br /><b>b.</b> Power down the PC.<br /><b>c.</b> Remove the cover.<br /><b>d.</b> Find an available PCI slot and remove the slot cover from the back of the PC.<br /><b>e.</b> Carefully insert the antenna through the open slot in the back of the PC, carefully push the card in the slot, and secure it. Replace the cover. <br /><b>f.</b> Start up the PC. It should recognize and install the new PCI card.<br /><b>g.</b> Go to the Control Panel, select Network connections, select Wireless Networking connection. Click on Properties button. Click on Wireless Networking tab. Select the wireless networking name (see step 2e). Click on Configure button. Configure your security settings to match the ones on your wireless router.<br />4. <b>Install a Wireless PC Card in a Notebook PC</b> <br />Many notebooks have built-in wireless cards. However, If yours doesn't, you can install either a USB wireless adapter or a wireless PC card just follow these instructions.<br /><b>a.</b> Refer to the card manufacturer's quick-start guide. If necessary, run the software installation program.<br /><b>b.</b> Power down the PC.<br /><b>c.</b> Plug your USB wireless Adapter or wireless PC Card into an available slot on the side of your notebook.<br /><b>d</b>. Start up the PC. It should recognize and install the new PCI card.<br /><b>e</b>. Go to the Control Panel, select Network connections, select Wireless Networking connection. How can I enable wireless for none wireless module of CF-R8?

I suggest staying away from BIOS flashing. Last thing you want is a brick.

In Win 7 - Go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing > Manage network connections. Enable the wireless card.

In XP - Go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections. Enable the wireless card.

How Do I connect to internet with my desktop without Ethernet cable

To connect wireless to a network ..you need a wireless router or access to a near by one ..and you need to install a wireless card on computer if it has non ..This can be a pci card and you will install it on a pci slot inside and install its driver and after that connect to the network available ..or use a wireless card on usb ..
If you do not have a network free near by ..you can connect using the wireless card to another computer connected to the internet ..or install a wireless router on your Ethernet cable ..and a card in computer or a usb one ..
In my opinion the wireless card and router is the best way cause connecting trough another computer can be tricky and slow..
another way ..if you do not have any other means is to use a wireless modem on usb from a mobile network ISP (internet service provider )
This can be the same provider as your mobile phone one ..

Why will my HP Pavilion dv6000 not read my router, what do I have to do toget my card to read wi fi signals?

First of all you have to make sure that your wireless network card is turned on...I believe the power switch is right below the edge of your left hand (right in the front of the laptop). the light should turn from orange to blue. When it does, it will either notify you of existing wireless network or you will have to manually have to search for network.
In Windows XP, simply right click the network icon [located in your bottom right corner of your screen] and click "View Wireless networks". In Windows Vista, left click on the wireless network icon [same location] and click connect or disconnect to now available wireless networks. In windows 7, the procedure is similar to the one in Windows Vista.

With secured networks, you will need the network key in order to connect, in others you will have to have your Media Access Control [MAC] address added to a MAC filter list in order to allow you to access the network...
What ever the case, it all depends on 1] Ensuring your wireless network card is turned on 2] Your computer is set to receive an IP address automatically...
I hope this was informative

Wireless router

You need a network card that is functioning to connect to anything.
If your network card in the desktop stops functioning, you will need to replace it (or, if it's built into the motherboard, add a card).
Unless you have a wireless card also installed, you cannot connect wirelessly.

0) Be sure that your wireless router is working properly

1) Check your wireless card on your computer
See the status of the card
>>My PC>> right click Properties >> Hardware >> Device Manager >> Network

2) Check if your card (if it is PCMCIA Card) was installed correctly, if not installed again.
if you dont have the driver, get the driver of your card from manufacturer website (D-link, etc)

3) If your card is built-in check be sure that the power button is ON

4) Check if you have some or your wireless network available

5) If not renew your ip address

6) If you see the network, select your network and connect.

Let me know how it is going

Emachine model t3302 ethernet card

This is how the wireless world works. You buy a wireless router with a four port switch. Your DSL or cable connects to that. A cable called a Rj45 connects the DSL or cable to the back of the wireless router. You also buy a wireless network card for your PC. After running the software for the router & the wireless nic card including setting up a home network through windows your daughter will be able to connect that computer to your network from any room in the house. Below is a link to a wireless router:
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10005578
You can connect up to four computers to the wirless router. A computer that does not connect to the router by a Rj45 must use a wireless network card. Linksys WMP54G Wireless-G PCI Adapter Retail: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=252286
As you will see there is a big differance between a NIC card & a wireless card.
