When i switch it on , the shutter doesnt open completely and makes a weird crackling noise and then beeps a few times and it says on the display to shut down and switch on the camera again. Re: shutter problem

I have the P51 (2MP) and lens cover also gets jamned opening and closing most of the time and gave same message as yours. The camera was out of warranty and my Sony dealer said it was pointless reparing it as it would cost half the price of a new (and better) digicam. So I purchased a P120 which is well made, but as per other postings on this site, it produces blurry images. (The P51 still works fine as a camera when the lens cover opens.)

Re: shutter problem

Sounds like something is jamming when trying to extend the lens. Is the battery fully charged? Otherwise, it might need repairing.

Re: shutter problem

Sand in the mechanism? Or other kind of wearout... If the lens cover does not open completely due to some mechanical problem, the camera will not work (there are switches to detect cover full open and full closed). Probably needs some repair, cleaning or replacing the cover gears

Shutter isn't opening...

hi..For shutter problems, take it to the expert, don't mess with
it yourself. Take it to a real camera store, and they should
either be able to fix it there or recommend or send it off to
someone who can.

DSC-P52 Shutter Problem

I have investigated my problem further and basically the teeth on the black cog which opens the lens cover have broken. This a very small component which attaches to the motor, so when you hear the motor, or if you have had grinding noises, it is the mechanism trying to operate the shutter but cannot beacuse the teath won't engage. If you have this probelm all the turning on and off again wont solve the issue. You might be lucky if only one of the teeth have broken but you are only postponing the inevitable which will happen when you least want it to. I have aChristening at the weekend and only hope I can get this sorted by then.

I will need a new shutter mechanism ( don't know the technical terms) but as yet I have to investigate where I can get one. Any suggestions anyone??

Take a picture with the camera and download it to your computer. If the picture also shows up black, then this sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Sony should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following link for more info:

DSC P52 cybershot camera

I cannot provide the answer but i think it may have something to do with the shutter mechanism. When you dropped it, something inside the mechanism may have bent or stopped. Don't take the camera apart yourself, take it to a specialist such as an electronics store. I hope this helps. Good Luck!
