When my front loading washer drains it smells rancid. I have run bleach in empty cycles to try and remedy this problem, but it continues to return. I even replaced the drain hose thinking water was sitting in the hose and causing the problem. Is there anything else that can be done? Please help! Thanks
I had the exact same problem and all of my clothes smelled like mildew. I switched to laundry detergent for front loaders ONLY and have eliminated this all together.
Run an empty cycle one time with 1cup of white vinegar.
Then start washing with the new detergent.

smelly front loader???all front loader tend to leave a little water left over in the inner tub after every load, always leave washer door a crack open to reduce smell/mold on seal,to get rid of smell simply run a normal cycle,no clothes, with a dose of bleach or better yet AFFRESH,made by whirlpool,a bleach tablet with fragerance, sanitze and smells good!!answer,,,AFFRESH
MAKE SURE YOUR WATER IS HOT WHEN STARTING THE FILL CYCLE YOU MAY HAVE TO FILL IT UP ONCE THEN DRAIN IT THEN FILL IT UP AGAIN TO MAKE SURE ITS HOT THEN ADD 1 CUP OF AUTOMATIC DISHWASHER SOAP AND RUN AN EMPTY CYCLE. THIS WILL REMOVE ALL ENZIMES AND SMELLS FROM WASHER
Try using bleach with hot water, run a cycle with hot water and bleach. Or spray bleach +water mixture on the seal. Run a cleaning cycle with hot water and bleach or vinegar at least once a month to reduce the growth of mold in other parts of the washer. You can also try using 1/2 a cup of Washing Soda or 4 cups of baking soda Crystals and run the machine with no clothes in it. This would remove all the debris, lint & mold growth from the drain pump and drain filter. This would clean the mold from the door seal as well. Hope this helps.. Please post back if you need mor information.
Hi, what happens is that water sits at the bottom of the discharge pipe, as well as a build up of "gunk", which is a great breeding ground for bacteria and such. So during the first rinse out, the smelly water and gunk is discharged into the drain, and the smell comes up from the laundry tub drain. Pour a few cups of bleach into the discharge hose and let it sit for an hour. This will kill all the nasties. Then just run the machine once through to pump out the bleach.
Check the drain hose for gunk then:
Fill up the tub half way with water (small load) put a cup of vinegar a 1/4 cup of baking soda let it foam up then run the washer through a regular cycle empty. If this does not work: you will need to use a commercial mold removing product.
run a empty cycle with bleach on whites/ sanitize. clean boot (rubber gasket at door) with bleach or other cleaner inside especially at bottom, make sure 3 holes at bottom are clear. this may take multiple cycles to rid of odor. For maintenance, you should wipe excess water from boot after last load, and check lower drain holes. Once a month wipe boot with windex or other. and run cleaner cycle (empty) newer machines have a special clean washer cycle. (6240 doesnt). Also clean your drain pump filter at bottom front behind access panel. If boot is really bad , replace.
Try getting the new whirlpool affresh washer tablets. They clean the mold and are supposed to make everything in the washer smell better and keep it clean. They are only around 10 bucks and is worth a shot to clean your smelly drain.
