i guess you tested the battery, with a voltmeter?
yes it is old. the manual is here,...
16 years old, is no spring chicken.
so battery is first on all things old battery first.

new it came with these options
4 x AA: Alkaline, NiMH, or Lithium
which do you have, try AA batteries first alkalien
so no need to charge them an can't

it needs smart media card to work.
it must be formatted in the camera, never in a PC.
so with 4 new AA batteries, alk
does the screen come on? it must.
or this puppy is toast.

Because your camera works with AA sized batteries, I advice you to buy a normal AA charger. Also try a new set of batteries, and although the camera came with alkaline batteries, don't use alkaline batteries on a charger. Only use NiMH batteries and an external charger.

Its an old model. Just buy a card reader that processes SMC Smart Media.
