ALL I KNOW IS ITS A DELL OPTIPLEX 960 AND I TRIED TO DO A REBOOT BY HITTING F2 AND THEN HOLDING ALT AND F AT THE SAME TIME.

Hi Tiffany,

it sounds like there has been some sort of corruption of the files on the hard disk. You should see about booting from the Windows installation CD / DVD and copying all the files that are of importance to you (documents, photos, music, etc.) on to an external hard drive connected to the USB port or installed as a slave drive internally. Once you have saved all the files you need, shut off the PC and disconnect / remove the drive with your files. Then reinstall Windows again. Once done, shut off the PC and reconnect the drive with your files and copy them back to the hard drive and you should be good to go unless he drive is beginning to fail - in which case purchasing a new hard drive would be a good idea.

When I turn on the computer it says boot mgr is missing. I guess I totally messed up when I tried to do a full system recovery. The discs I have are from geek squad there is tow of them.

An operating system would have been nice ?

How to Create a Windows 7 System Repair Disc:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2083-system-repair-disc-create.html

"This will show you how to create a Windows 7 system repair disc to use to boot to the system recovery options if you don't have a Windows installation disc, can't find your

Windows installation disc, or can't access the recovery options provided by your computer manufacturer."

or

If you do not have access to either disc: Windows 7 - Repair Disc download
http://neosmart.net/blog/2009/windows-7-system-repair-discs/

a) Insert the Windows 7 System Repair DVD or Installation DVD and reboot.

b) Select the correct keyboard input method and click 'Next'.

Note: If you are using the Windows7 Install DVD then at the 'Install Now' prompt (Do not pick the Install

Now option) instead choose the 'Repair your computer' option located in the lower left of the dispay.

c) The System Repair tool will search for a valid operating system and will report that "Windows found problems with your computer's startup options. Do you want to apply repairs and restart your computer?"

d) Click 'Repair and restart' and reboot again to the Windows 7 System Repair environment.

e) Click 'Next' at the keyboard selection prompt and when the 'System Recovery Options' screen appears verify that the "Use recovery tools that can help fix problems starting Windows" is selected.
Note that on your Dual Boot system there now should be only one operating system listed. Click the 'Next' button.

f) Now from the menu list select the 'Command Prompt' option.

g) At the DOS prompt type the following three commands:

bootrec.exe /fixmbr

bootrec.exe /fixboot (may return an 'Eliment not found' message)

bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd

h) Close the command prompt window and click the 'Startup Repair' option.

i) The repair process may take some time, so wait until the process completes at which point you will see two messages "Windows cannot repair this computer automatically" and "Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically".

These messages are the result of the radical changes made by removing the other drive. Ignore the Send/Don't send options.

J) Close this message window by clicking on the X in the upper right corner of the Send/Don't send window. Next click on the 'View advanced options for system recovery and support' option and from the main menu once again click 'Startup Repair'.

This time the repair process may only that a few seconds and when prompted "Startup Repair could not detect a problem", click 'Finish' and run the 'Startup Repair' option one more time, click 'Finish', and then remove the System Repair DVD and click 'Restart'. Reboot the computer.

hope this helps

I have lost my instruction booklet and it has been almost 1.5 years since I have used the notebook. I cannot get it to turn off. It keeps saying Windows is Shuting Down; however, it is still on. Can...

Hi There,

Simply hold down the power button until the notebook shuts down. Then, restart the notebook and it may just boot up normally. If you're taken to a screen with options that include Startup Repair or Start Windows Normaly, try Normaly first. If it won't start, use Startup Repair the next time around.

When you leave a notebook off that long, Windows may have tried to install dozens of updates. You will need to patiently update Windows completely.

Regards,

Selk

You can just Purchase the CD/DVD from any store near you if you dont have one.

How can i make my laptop work faster

Run disk defragmenter located on the system tools menu. You can also disable some startup items that run in the background therefore slowing your system.
To disable startup items:
  1. Use the System Configuration Utility to safely turn off programs that start-up through the Windows Registry. Access this utility by going to the Start -> Runrun.jpg
  2. Type msconfig and press Enter.
  3. Under the Startup tab there is a list of all the programs that start in the Windows Registry. By unchecking many of the programs you can speed up the launch time of Windows.
  4. You may uncheck everything but it is recommended to keep your antivirus checked to keep you protected always.config.jpg

Pop up keeps comming up

If you are on Windows, check your startup programs by running command, msconfig and tab over to startup to the right, last tab. If all else fails, switch over to a free Linux distrobution such as Linux Mint.

When the computer starts up. "Gateway" appears on the screen. Then the computer freezes. None of the reinstallation discs do anything. How do I fix this?

Reboot and keep tapping on F8 to go to Safe Mode. Do not put the reinstallation disk yet. Once in Safe Mode select "last known good configuration".

You can also run "Chkdsk" from the C hard drive Properties if you get to Safe Mode. Double click "My Computer", right click on C drive, select Properties, select Tools tab, go to Error checking and click on "Check now" then check "automatically fix file system errors" and "scan for and attemp recovery for bad sectors" and click "start"

If that doesn't work proceed to do System Restore in Safe Mode or remove previous programs that may have caused your Windows to freeze. If you suspect virus, run your anti-virus in Safe Mode.

If none of the above works then try your XP CD (or reinstallation disk) and do a repair.
