There is a software on the market called Acronis True image, this software will help you make a complete ghost of your existing installation and put that ghost/image onto another harddrive, this can then be copied back to your original harddrive should you have a problem like a virus or Windows update problem.
Here is a link to the 15 day free trial:
http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/download/trueimage/
You will obviously need to purchase it if you need to make the recovery after the 15 days.
Another way of doing it is to buy an Apricorn external harddrive housing, this housing doesn't come with a harddrive you choose your own to go in it, but, it comes with EZgig which is essentially Acronis True Image in disguise.
The idea of the Apricorn housings was to upgrade your existing laptop harddrive but now I use them as just ordinary external harddrives.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817155602
Apricorn make many different enclosures, this one is just small enough to fit in your laptop case and only requires USB to make it work, you can use an external power supply with it as obviously with no external power it will run your laptop battery down quite quickly.

The idea is to make the ghost image before you have the problem, that way instaed of going through the long drawn out proccess of reinstalling windows you just format the harddrive with the problem and copy the good image back.

Start menu.... programs.... look in there for the brand of computer you have or just tools.... create restore disks is what you need to do.... if you should lose your factory image or just need to restore the system and can't boot into the operating system to restore.. use them.

for that last suggestion about acronis... if the problem is a virus and you make a ghost image and reuse it... seems to me you are just copying the virus as well and transferring it. correct me if i'm wrong.

I bought a new computer with windows vista. i have the product key code from my old computer's office 2003 and want to install that on the new computer. how do i do this?

Hi,
Usually with the new computer, its common that you get a MS Office 2007 TRIAL version. However, that can't be made a full version unless we buy it.. So, friend i kindly suggest you to go for a new copy or you can install the 2003 version that you already have.
There is an old saying that says : "Old is Gold"
Cheers!!! Have a nice day!!!

I'm facing major problem of active desktop recovery. Also I'm unable to restore my active desktop.

If all fails, then the last resort would be Reformat Your Computer. Save Everything. When you do a Reformat, all data is lost.
I found this on the web. You can click on the link to see it more in view.
http://www.ehow.com/how_5039946_reformat-windows-vista-computer.html
Step 1 ATTENTION!

Reformatting a computer will reset it to the factor image, all data must be backed up or it WILL be lost. There are several reasons to reformat a hard drive. A few reasons include but are not limited to: driver issues, virus, cleaning up, getting rid of the computer, etc.

Step 2 Recovery Disk Creator
Every new windows vista owner should know that the new computers are not supplied with recovery disks anymore. The manufacturer allows the user to create one set of disks upon the purchase of a new machine. It is important to create the disks early as driver issues and viruses may arise. In order to create recovery disks on windows vista you want to click on the start menu. Next, type in recovery in the Start Search option area. Next, click on recovery disk creation and follow the process. It will require that you have about 3 dvds or about 7 cds to create the recovery disks.
REFORMATING HARD DRIVE!

Once the recovery disks have been made reformatting windows vista is quite simple. Insert the recovery disks into the cd/dvd tray on the machine. You are now going to want to turn the computer off. When the computer has turned off, go ahead and turn it back on. A screen should pop up asking you whether you want to boot from Hard Drive or Disk. Choose the disk option. After you make it this far it is a downhill process. Next you follow the on-screen instruction make sure you reformat the machine, not recover it.

Good Luck :0)

Cannot load valid copy of Office 2003, Adobe 7.0 pro, quickbooks

If it is a "new" computer, and Office 2003 and Adobe 7.0 Professional came "pre-installed" on your computer, then take everything back to where you bought the computer, and get them to assist you. If they are at all a "responsible" retailer, they will support the products that they have sold to you.

If you have your own copy of Office 2003, and you are trying to install it, then start Vista's "Program Compatibility Wizard", and select that you want to install an "XP" program, and select the CD-ROM as the "source" for the software that you want to install.

Vista will wrap an "envelope" around Office 2003, to emulate a Windows XP environment.

Same for Quickbooks and for Adobe software.

How can i make quickbooks 2005 run on a vista laptop?

Here is how to load and activate Quickbooks 2005 on Vista...

First of all, if you already have an activated copy of QuickBooks 2005 on another computer open it and go to "help" "my license information" and print this out so you have the details needed for activating your reinstalled copy (you don't need a fresh activation key and you may have trouble getting one as QuickBooks 2005 is no longer supported by Intuit).

On your new Vista computer, insert the QuickBooks CD but cancel any program install windows that pop up. Go to my computer and find setup.exe on the CD, right click and select the option to "run as administrator"

Once installed, navigate to the QuickBooks folder on your hard drive (typically C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks) right click on QB32.exe and on the compatibility tab select both Disable visual themes" and "run as adminstrator". Now open this file to run QuickBooks and select "file" "Update QuickBooks" to download and install all updates. QuickBooks will not work properly until you have downloaded the updates, closed and reopened the program.

I had problems with activation but I got around this by unplugging my network cable so that I had no internet connection. If you run QuickBooks without an internet connection, when the screen pops up asking you to "activate" click next and the screen to enter your license details will appear. enter your details (printed out from your previous installation) and you are done. You can restore the internet connection and use QuickBooks 2005 normally.

Good luck!

Andrew

Quickbooks Pro-restoring a back up from a previous version 2005

If is any help - we have just had the same problem.......had version 5 (very old) of QB
changed computer to Vista and would not work so had to buy Pro 208 for Vista . We really had to get in touch with Quickbooks - they send you a free upgrade kit (disc which is Pro 2006 version (not a fuull version but enogh to get the data over) then you load that on your old machine transfer your data to that then copy that again - then load into Pro 2008 - worked fine for us - have come across a hiccup with VAT - but however I guess we are going to have to give in and phone them after the Bank holiday........apart from that everything was fine.

be brave and phone 'em - tech support was helpful.
