    BUT

What I did was unplugging the red cables from both TV and DVD player and the buzzing is no longer there. Is this OK?? It won't affect the equipment? Thankyou for your help anyway....

Make sure the audio cables are connected to the correct ports on the dvd player AND the tv. Swap the red/white position if necessary.

You should be fine - you will only get analog/mono audio, but that is definitely one way to solve the problem.

Have alot of buzzing noise when we play a DVD but not when watching tv.

Verify the AUDIO cables from the DVD player to the TV they could be defective (even if new)
push the PLUGES firmly so they are correctly seated, play with (shake/move) the AUDIO cables while playing a DVD to see if it's not a loose connection

Cheers!

Audio won't play on DVD - but it will play for CDs

Hello, you can verify that your receiver is working or not. When you are playing a dvd unplug the audio RCA plugs (red and white) from the back of the Sony dvd player. Touch the tips of each of the RCA plugs with your fingertip. You will hear a buzz sound coming from the speaker associated with the plug if the receiver is working\ i.e. touch the red RCA plug tip and the right speaker will hum...touch the white tip and the left speaker will hum or buzz. This will not hurt your system or speaker. If you do not hear the hum turn the volume to 3 or so and wet your fingertip and tap the tip of the RCA connectors. You will hear "pops" coming from the respected channel. I believe your cd\dvd is at fault. Good Luck!
