Question about Air Conditioners

1 Answer

I have a Char Broil Gas grill, and ignition has become a bit of a problem lately. I can see the electric igniter sparking, I have been able to smell LPG and keep the lid open. If it does ignite, it usually does so in a fireball fashion while removing arm hair. Is this a cleaning issue, or should I just cave and buy new parts / grill.

It sounds like you may have electric heat. With that being the case and your description of a burning smell indicates an electrical problem. Since you did get it to start heating it sounds like a possible heat relay problem. I have also found burned connections and I was able to repair them and get the heat strips working again. If you know an air-conditioning and heating technician or electrician you should try to get assistance. The voltage in these units is dangerous and one mistake could only make things worse.

if theres no sign off the igniter lighting up or sparking (depending on make and model) then most likely it will have to be replaced. so if your not familiar with the igniter then I would recommend a tech. do the work due the the cost of some igniters. some can't even be touched with bare hands be cause of oils. hope this helps.

I have 2 Superser heaters. The newer one ignites at the 2nd or 3rd push of the plunger. However, the older one is a real pain. Some years ago after a summer of inactivity, it failed to ignite so I took...

The first thing I would do is make sure that ignitor is in the proper placement. Compare it to your other one. You can carefully clean ignitor and pilot assembly. Check to see that you have a good strong spark when you push plunger. If not you probably need to replace the ignitor. One thing you can do is to hold pilot control down like usual and light with a match. You can check but a lot of these units use a spark ignitor like they use on propane grills, about $15.00 in most hardware stores. Hope this helps you. Thanks

I have an a.o. Hot water heater 3 years that camewith my new home lately the igniter would click on and the flame would ignite but only stay on for about 3 to 5 seconds this would repeat about 5 times...

A complete description of the appliance - name, model, and if available, serial number will go a long way to help fully answer your question. Without this info, I recommend that you contact a plumber or your gas company to have the pilot / thermocouple assembly inspected, cleaned or replaced.

Typically, when a pilot is lit, it is "proven" by the thermocouple (temperature sensor) located in the pilot flame. The thermocouple sends a signal to the gas control circuit. The control shuts off the gas supply as a safety measure if the thermocouple does not sense flame within a very short period of time. Otherwise, dangerous levels of combustible gas will collect in the area - increasing the potential for an explosion if a spark is struck by a ringing telephone, door bell, or other electrical device nearby.

I can here ignitor sparking but no flame, on a Carrier RTU.

Can you see the spark? It shoud be around about 1/4" gap. Make sure the igniter is sparking on the burner. Can you smell gas or hear the gas coming on? The pilot if it has one could be dirty or if it does not have one then the main burner cross over may need to be cleaned. Be careful and stand away from the heater while checking.

Ignitor fires early or gas valve turns on too late - no ignition

Put your hand on the gas valve and see if the click of the valve is opening just before the ignitor goes off if it does your valve is going bad

No ignition

Yes. Gas ignitors either spark or glow. Find a way to look at the ignitor, even if you have to use a mirror. If it sparks or glows, figure out why the gas isn't getting into contact with the ignitor. If it doesn't spark or glow, the ignitor is probably bad, but the controller might not be sending it electricity (bad controller). This is what electrical meters are for. Checking for voltage at the ignitor will tell you if the controller is telling it to ignite.
