The front of the machine ( the peice that holds the brush roller ) and the bag unit are part of a safety system that will only let it turn on if both are locked firmly in place, after checking that examine the cord, look for any burn marks especially at the plug and where the cord clips into the retainer on the handle and if you can where it plugs into the machine but you will probably need a set of torx screwdrivers for that. if there was any funny noises before it shut off the kids could have damaged the motor, and just because the belt isnt broken it can still get burnt and make a bad smell change them ever six months to a year

I have the G series Kirby silver vacuum, I was vacuuming and started to smell some burning. Looked down and my green light was off also. What could it be? PLS HELP

Your belt is burning and will eventually wear down and break. The green light comes from copper brushes on your roller creating an electrical current that lights the little green light. As long as the roller is turning, the light will stay on. There may be something jamming the roller (hair, string, paper, etc). Clean the roller off and replace your belt. If you don't replace the belt it will break soon enough. Once you start smelling the "rubber burning" smell it's and indication that your belt has deteriorated at some point and has a weak spot in it. Clean the roller and replace the belt and it should be fine.

Smells (burnt rubber) like it's overheating when I vacuum

I would check the brush roller and make sure it turns good and replace the belt on it . When you smell burning rubber most of the time it is the belt .

G4 model is burning

May be the carbon brushes. DO NOT run the vacuum until you check them. If they are worn out, they can damage your armature and that is expensive to replace. Try my troubleshooting guide. It helps with do-it-yourself Kirby repairs. You'll also find links to directions and free repair guides!

Belts Burning

Yes, replace the brush roll, the ends or end is probably bad and causing the belt to slip and burn up.

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
In answer to your question, the reason it smells like burning rubber is because the belt is too loose and it is burning the inside of the belt because it is to loose, the average belt change for a Kirby vacuum is every 4 to 6 months, the tighter the belt the better the cleaning and always use the genuine Kirby belts because they are designed to work with the Kirby, there are replacement belts that will work and are less but they are made to the correct size but Kirby vacuums always s work better with genuine parts. If you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.
