Question about Ranger TR-696F SSB CB Radio

1 Answer

SSB radio I have a one year old ICOM 710 SSB with seperate tuner. Reception is not bad but transmission is very poor. Is the ground the most important aspect of the radio for transmission? I have ordered an external grounding plate for the boat.

If you are using the radio on a boat, then no, the grounding does not matter that much. However, an SSB transceiver would be hassle to install on a boat because of the amount of power they use to transmit. If the transmission is bad, try using the radio's internal tuner instead of the separate tuner. This may help improve the quality of transmit, however, some radios have a tough time clarifying incoming and outgoing signals and create a garbled sound when it receives a signal or when it transmits. If that doesn't work, then you can try grounding. But if you want a radio that doesn't require all this nonsense tning, you might want to think about investing in a Yaesu. They are pricey, but are one of the best HAM radios.

Cannot select USB or SSB.Displays LSB or LISB? Very poor reception

On the Satellit 750 you have a button marked SSB. If you have selected a shortwave band then you can press the SSB button. Pressing the button repeatedly will toggle between LSB and USB.

You will need to know the exact frequency and the broadcast time, and the side band. Turn the radio on. Select a frequency which you know carries SSB signal and wait. Those that broadcast on SSB are not radio stations, maybe ham radio operators.

You can also select a short wave band, press the SSB button once or twice to select the side band and launch the automatic tuning system. It will scan the meter band and stop for a few second when it receives a strong enough signal. If you are able to perceive a clear signal on LSB or USB then you found a broadcaster. Some radios just have SSB and you cannot choose the side.
Personally, when I buy a radio I always insist on SSB but I have never been lucky tuning in an SSB signal. I keep trying once in while.

Is the antenna secure in back of radio? Antenna on vehicle OK? If antenna OK I might think radio tuner is just bad. Need new radio.

Specification of the radio

The ICOM IC-R3 is a handheld wideband receiver (NOT a 2-way radio) that covers 0.495-815.995 and 902-2450.095 MHz in AM, FM wide, FM narrow, and TV modes. It offers 450 channels in 8 banks. This scanner/receiver does not receive SSB, digital, or trunked transmissions, and the TV band is useless in the USA since all transmissions are now digital.

If you're an old hand, this might be the perfect scanner/receiver for you. Otherwise, you should probably avoid it, as it's complicated/difficult to operate, lacking in many features that are standard in most scanners, and generally high-priced. The R3 and its big brother, the R5, were dismal failures in the USA scanner market.

For more detailed info/specs, you can download/print the R3 product brochure and instruction manual here:

Reception is very poor. Grounding issues? Please

Reception has little to do with grounding. The ground plan is for transmitting. As long as the coax is connected and is in good standing, it should receive fine regardless of grounding.

There are a few reasons you may have bad reception.
  1. Turn the RF GAIN all the way up. This is your receive sensitivity.
  2. Squelch is too high. It should only be turned up enough to cut out the background noise.
  3. Poor antenna. If the antenna is cheap, and not made well, this could be the problem.
  4. Not enough of the antenna above the vehicle. It needs to be at least 60% of the antenna above the vehicle.
Hope this helps!

Which channels? Tuners are divided into bandwidths-----
2-6 is V low, 7-13 is V high and so on.If say, 2-6 acts up, but
7 thru 13 never does, then the tuner is bad.
This solution assumes that video inputs were ok......T.
