My AE1 is malfunctioning. The shutter is being released when I advance instead of allowing me to expose the film with the shutter button.

Hmmm. Sounds like something internal is not engaging as it should. It probably is a plastic gear that has aged a little too long, and some of the teeth are broken off. Yes, this will need a trip to the repair shop. It's probably due for Clean, Lube and Adjust anyway.

Garryscamera.com and many others will repair this camera for you. Luckily, AE-1 was a great seller for Canon, so there are lots of spare parts out there. On Ebay, they are inexpensive and common. Buy one as a backup or parts donor, as they are old enough to start falling apart.

Why do my pictures come out black when they are developed

If we assume that the lens cap has been removed for the pictures, then you have other issues. The shutter is not opening. Why?
1. mechanical issue like something broken, bent, jumped out of the track.
solution: repair shop

2. electronic issue like exposure module died, misreading exposure sensor, flash not raising and firing, etc.
solution: repair shop.

Repair shop will also Clean, Lube and Adjust.

I dropped the camera and the battery door will not shut now. The camera works if I hold the door shut myself. How can this be fixed and about how much?

If the battery door is broken then you may be able to have it repaired. Contact us at SpartanPhotoCenter 864-583-6835 to se if we have the part in stock. Repair for just the battery door with return shipping in the USA is $ 55.00

The control knob is stuck on my D40

You could do that, but I don't recomend it. You could damage the camera beyond repair. Take it to a local electronist or Nikon dealer for repairs and cleanings.

The catch that holds the camera back has broken. Is this a common problem? Where can I get it fixed? Roughly how much will it coat?

Every repair shop is privately owned and each one has their own pricing.
You may be able to get a broken EOS 30 to use for parts on Ebay, and replace the door yourself, or use it as a parts donor.
It will cost less if the repair guy does not have to hunt on Ebay for a new door. I doubt if Canon is still providing parts for these older models.

I have a canon eos 1000 35mm with no flash. Works fine, but the LCD in the viewfinder has a large blot on it. Any ideas? Repairable?

Yes, its repairable, but frankly it wouldn't be cost effective to do so. The EOS 1000 is selling for less than $40 for the body on the used market:

http://completed.shop.ebay.com/items/Film-Cameras__canon-eos-1000_W0QQLHQ5fCompleteZ1QQ_catrefZ1QQ_dmptZFilmQ5fCamerasQQ_flnZ1QQ_sacatZ15230QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em283

and it would cost you much much more to send it off to Canon and have the LCD panel replaced.
