i'd be vacuuming, and when i'd shut it off and lift up the front end, smoke was coming out of the "mouth" of the vacuum, where the suction and the wheel would come in contact w/the carpet. it smelled like burnt rubber mostly. i think i figured out that i was vacuuming it on too low a level. i'm supposed to start at the highest level, turn the vacuum on, then one by one, go down each level until it "sounds different" because the suction is affecting the carpet, then go down just one more click. turns out i was vacuuming my rug, carpet and tile each on one level too low and i was burning out the belt and brush like crazy.

thank you! i didn't know you could do that to the brush wheel. ;)

where does the smoke come from? and was it a burnt hair smell, burnt rubber smell or electrical smell?

Sounds about right you should change that type of belt every six months to a year regardless if its broken or not. one other thing you should do is make sure the brush roll itself isn't bound up it should spin freely if not you can pull the plastic ends off the roller to clean any hair or thread out .

Actually it can. If the machine has a defect but the good news is that is has a 3 year warranty. Take it to a Kirby authorized repair shop not a vac and sew and they will fix it right up....I am a factory authorized service tech for the Kirby co.

Smells like burning rubber when I turn on my G6 Kirby vacuum.

You must take of the plastic ends from the wood beater bar and make sure the metal axels are not wound up with hair. I did this monthly with 4daughters

Smells (burnt rubber) like it's overheating when I vacuum

I would check the brush roller and make sure it turns good and replace the belt on it . When you smell burning rubber most of the time it is the belt .

Kirby is smoking and breaking belts

First thing , make sure that the roller brush is turning freely.. should spin like a top.. free and easy, if not that is the problem
the bearing on the ends are seized up and it isnt turning and you belt is turning on the motor shaft, thus causing the smoke and burning

G4 model is burning

May be the carbon brushes. DO NOT run the vacuum until you check them. If they are worn out, they can damage your armature and that is expensive to replace. Try my troubleshooting guide. It helps with do-it-yourself Kirby repairs. You'll also find links to directions and free repair guides!

Vibrating and noisy Kirby

Power off the vacuum.

Unplug the power cord from the wall.

Remove the head or hose attachment.

Look at the fan and make sure all the fins on the fan are there.

If part of one or more is missing it will cause the fan to wobble and shake.
