Dial up modems have 2 phone line connections side by side in the back of a desktop, one is for the wall, other is for your telephone. Laptops have just one phone line connector. Look closely at the little symbols by the connection holes. If you don't have one, Modems (internal or externally mounted), are on eBay, buy a 56K with drivers on disk for your operating system. A few modems can be installed using Windows default drivers (drivers are software operating programs that tell your computer how to regulate and operate a device).

I got a used laptop I was told to clear it and than dowload windows xp back on it I have wireless at work but home I have dail-up and it tells me I have no modem help

Dial up connection needs a modem for the authentication with a telephone number - without modem no one can work with internet .yes if you want to use your laptop wireless you can do it but to do that you should have a DSL service with a wireless router .
this is how the connections in DSL is been done
DSL(telephone line) ->modem->wireless router->computer

we here at fixya dont have any internet service products at this time but i would recommend that you research what you want to do like just web browsing or heavy downloading then look into if you want slow speeds like dial up or high speed like broadband several places offer cheap dial up internet like aol or netzero or if you want to pay abit more money then go with a high speed provider like quest or comcast

Here is the internet setup info for that netbook from Dell's website ...

Setting up Your Internet Connection To connect to the Internet, you need a modem or network connection and an Internet Service provider (ISP).
To set up an Internet connection with a provided ISP desktop shortcut:
  1. Save and close any open files, and exit any open programs.

  2. Double-click the ISP icon on the Microsoft® Windows® desktop.

  3. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the setup.

note.gif NOTE: Have your ISP information ready. If you do not have an ISP, the Connect to the Internet wizard can help you obtain one.
If you do not have an ISP icon on your desktop or if you want to set up an Internet connection with a different ISP:
Windows Vista®
  1. Save and close any open files, and exit any open programs.

  2. Click Start interne3.jpg ® Control Panel® Network and Internet.

  3. Under Network and Sharing Center, click Connect to the Internet.

The Connect to the Internet window appears.
  1. Click either Broadband (PPPoE), Wireless, or Dial-up, depending on how you want to connect:

    • Choose Broadband if you will use a DSL modem, cable TV modem, or satellite modem.

    • Choose Wireless if you will use a wireless connection through a WLAN card.

    • Choose Dial-up if you will use a dial-up modem or ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network).

note.gif NOTE: If you do not know which type of connection to select, click Help me choose or contact your ISP.
  1. Follow the instructions on the screen and use the setup information provided by your ISP to complete the setup.

Windows® XP

  2. Click Start interne6.jpg ® Control Panel® Network and Internet Connections.

  3. Click Set up or change your Internet connection.

  4. Click Setup. New Connection Wizard window appears.

  5. Click Next. Choose Connect to the Internet and click Next.

I have tired to log on to the internet through my default provider and cannot. I have gotten error messages that read: Sigmatel C-major msinfo32

Sigmatel c-major is your audio driver, not your internet driver. It is possible you have a corrupted driver. I would uninstall the sigmatel driver, then get the dell disc and reinstall it. I would also remove and reload my Ethernet driver, my Wireless driver and my dial up modem driver, just to be sure.

As for the internet provider, You would need to clarify how you connect: wired (ethernet, usb) wireless (wifi, router, cellular) or dial up (aol, netzero, juno on a 56k modem and phone line). Different things can cause internet failures. For example, a cordless phone can disrupt wireless connections. An infected "winsock" can knock out all your network connections, and a bad cord or a bad jack can ruin any wired connection.

Let me know how it goes, Good luck.

well according to the specs i saw it already has a wireless lan card, an ethernet card, and a old school phone modem jack, so you should be good. are you having issues connecting to the internet via wifi?

Does my new Emachine laptop have no dial up modem?

Correct. It's looking for a standard dialer modem. You may just need to go through the internet connection wizard and define how you want to connect. With a wireless adapter, you could locate and connect to internet with that instead of a dial-up modem. Internet connetion wizard comes with Vista and XP and is found: Start > Control Panel > Network connections.

Pentium III 800 mhz T21 Thinkpad Internet connection problems

why fight it , let it be on com 1 then,
go into the bios and disable the serial ports .
that may be the easiest fix as long as you don't need the serial port for anything.
but if you have a serial mouse oh boy.
