There are a few possible problems. The most likely is that somehow your images/movies, etc got turned off. Go to Options>Under the Hood>Content Settings and make sure nothing's turned off. Also, check your plugins (should be in "Under the Hood") to make sure that everything's enabled.
If it's like this only for certain sites, there might be a compatibility issue with the site using google chrome, or one of its many updates. Try following the instructions on this site to downgrade the version of Chrome. Make sure to deny the auto updates though, or it will silently upgrade and undo your work.
If neither of those options work/sound appealing to you, just use firefox or some other web browser to navigate until google chrome updates again. If you're having this issue, I guarantee others are too, so they'll come out with an update soon to take care of the issue. Good luck!
