Question about RCA D61W20 61" Rear Projection Television

RCA Projection TV Alignment

I have an RCA 91636 61" Projection TV that has a convergence problem. Quite a few months ago, we heard a snap and the TV shut off. It came right back on when we hit the power button, but it is bowed in on the top, bottom and sides. We can't adjust the green convergence, but have adjusted the Red and Blue so it doesn't look 3D, but there are no straight lines on it.

I'm capable of performing board swaps, etc, but haven't seen any references to what to change. Can you help?

Which board is it? I just paid for Premium service and they said to change the STK IC, but couldn't tell me where to find it or which one it would be. I've been all through my console and don't see any chip labeled STK anything. I have 2 boards which are very accessible. SRS-810 and YPRPB-130 AV5. Either of those sound right?

    Thanks in advance.

As an update, it is a P61939. Thanks again.

I've worked with a tech how had me do voltage readings on the convergence board and says the board is performing properly.

He thinks it is in the Horizontal PIN circuit and we are looking there. Thanks for the suggestion.

As a follow up, my set doesn't have any STK's on it, which I assume you knew when you said to replace the whole board. My EXPERT $14.99 service could tell me nothing but to change the STK's. Couldn't tell me where the board was located or which STK's it would have. What a rip. I got better support from you for free.

    Thanks

You would have to swap out the convergence board itself and you would need to order the part either from a delaer or through a tv repair shop.all you have to give them is the make and model of the tv and they will tell you what you need from there as far as which board etc

How do I adjust the convergence properties on an RCA rear projection tv?

Normally on the RCA rear projection TV's you would bring up your menu and choose the Setup menu, then press OK on the remote. That menu would then have Convergence as a choice. Once that was chosen the next menu would give you the choice of either letting the TV run it's own Autoconvergence program, or you would select either Red or Blue convergence.

Choosing Red Convergence would bring up a Yellow cross-hair in the middle of the screen. If the Convergence was not correct you would see separate Green and Red cross-hairs. Once they were perfectly aligned you would again see one Yellow cross-hair.

Choosing Blue Convergence would bring up a Blue cross-hair in the center of the screen. If the alignment was out you would see 2 Blue cross-hairs. Using the Up and Down and Left and Right cursor keys you would adjust the alignment until a single solid Blue cross-hair was in the center of the screen.

Help with RCA projection TV P46812BL (chasis ptk195AA)

You have probably blown one of the convergence ICs. Effectively the easiest thing to do is replacing the whole convergence board, so that no soldering is involved.

Here you can buy a replacement convergence board, just select your model.

Let me know if you need further help.

We have a RCA D52W23 rear projection TV. Now the color looks like it is in 3D. A friend has the same problem a few years ago and bought a part on line and fixed it themselves. What is the part and where...

projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Cant find convergence on menu screen

The HD61LPW42 is a RCA DLP which doesnt have convergence. If the convergence is out of alignment you have a three CRT TV such as the D52W19, HD52W59 RCA Check the model number from the rear tag and let me know what the model number is.

Panasonic PT-47WX53G Projection TV - convergence problem, can not align completely

I don't know why that guy told you to replace your "DC" board (that is the one you mean, right?) More likely than not, it's your convergence amp integrated circuits (ICs). I had what I think was the same problem (on the same exact model TV) you described, and I looked around alot of blogs and DIY websites, and this seems to be the most prevalent root behind these convergence problems. I ordered the two chips for twelve bucks (for both), spent a few extra bucks (like $35) on some electronic tools / solder supplies, and followed procedures laid out here at http://cmpalmer.blogspot.com/2006/11/fixing-my-own-tv-part-i.html, as well as paying strict attention to the service repair manual (which you said you already have?). The result? No more convergence problem, and I saved myself around $400 - $550 over having it done by a professional.

Seriously-- I bet this is the culprit. Just make sure if you're gonna do this that you FIRST check the six resistors (located at spots D-7011 thru D-7016) to make sure there are none burnt out / opened. It may be that one of those is fried also / instead. Since they are far easier to replace, it's good just to rule them out first.

And by the way, just FIY, when I did this I had kept the TV unplugged for about two weeks first, cuz I wanted to make sure all the capacitors were discharged and safe. Did I need that much time? Maybe not (some have said a few hours is sufficient), but I was also primarily concerned about the Flyback Transformer and its wires, which have the highest voltage (up to 30,000 volts) and can hold a charge pretty long. And I'm still here to write about it. So, check out the link, and see if you'd like to try this yourself, as well!

Problem with convergence

you dont need new CRTs (tubes) you need either the convergence Board or the convergence power supply board depending on the symptoms. If its only one color that is out of alignment its most likely the convergence board. If all the colors are out of alignment you need the convergence power supply board. you can get whichever one you need at the following link as they have both of those circuit boards and have free shipping.
