Hi, when using the gain control on my amp I get a buzz and an 'osilating' sound. I've tried several guitars and leads but still the same problem, any suggestions?

Hi.

If the amp is working, then most of the time the buzz is given by a bad grounding. Test the amp using different wall sockets, and possibly test it in a different home (there may be an earthing problem with the home network). If the problem goes away, then it was the wall socket or the home power network. If the buzzing is still there the problem is with the amp. Check the earth connection at power cord and psu and test the amplifier's PSU components. Check also the audio connections inside the amp (the back of the female jack input sockets). A small contact in there will result in a loud buzz.

You MAY have a broken input jack. If you can hear changes from the overdrive gain control, that control is just one stage away from the input jack. Also there is a capacitor C60 that is for RF bypassing and if that shorts that will kill the audio. Yes, inout jacks get destroyed by tripping over guitar cables... that is why you run the cord through the amp handle before plugging it in. Of course verify your guitar and cable is good using another amp.

By ading in the harmony signals you are combining 3 signals so gain is probably going to be high you will have to reduce it before it goes to the amp or turn down the input gain of the amp.

NEVER use a pedal in the external effects loop of an amp as the levels are wrong.

Try this using a differeent computer. Some computers generate a lot of digital noise. Also use a lot of gain from the guitar to improve the signal to noise ratio.

It sounds like somehow the pre-gain is very high while the volume or post-gain is very low. Try turning the volume high on the effects unit and the gain low, and don't have the amp volume too low either.

The guitar is not amplifying
faulty lead? when the lead is plugged in turn the amp distortion on (may be called 'gain') and when you tap the end that goes into the guitar with your finger you should hear a buzz. try another lead if not, and if it still doesn't work make sure that volume is up on the amp and the guitar. there may also be a knob in the back of the amp, turn that up too (but not all the way or when you do get it working you'll blow the speakers out).

Buzzing noise when not playing
All amplifiers make a little bit of noise (hiss) but it is normally slight and drowned out by playing. However, assuming that this is not normal system hiss, here are a few simple steps to try and locate the source of the problem by process of elimination.
  1. SAFETY FIRST - a common cause of a humming or buzzing sound can be a lack of earth (grounding) on the mains supply. With a 240volt AC supply this hum will be at 50hz (in the UK) - frequency may vary in other countries but should be similar. Check the earth first because of risk of electric shock. Until you are satisfied that this is not the cause of the problem DO NOT touch any metal parts of the amp. Remove the mains lead and try a different one. Try plugging the amp into a different mains outlet socket (preferably one on a completely different circuit).
  2. Turn off other electrical equipment in the vicinity that may be causing interference. Move the amp a bit, try rotating it by 90 degrees to change relationship to things like mains electric cables in the floor.
  3. If you are using the line-out socket to give a feed to a mixer, slave amp or p.a. system unplug this. Sometimes double earthing (through the mains lead of your amp AND the mains lead of the MIXER / PA) will cause an 'earth loop' due to a different resistance at each end. Putting a DI box with an 'earth lift' in between may eliminate this problem. Alternatively there are little gadgets you can buy to do this (I found one intended for car audio systems on Amazon that works very well)
  4. Unplug any instrument leads - to eliminate possibilities of interference affecting cables, effects pedals or guitar pick-ups. Also unplug the foot-switch.
  5. If that stops it plug a lead in without a guitar on the other end - does the noise return? If yes change the lead. If no plug the guitar in.
  6. Try moving the guitar in relation to the amp (turn it around 90 or 180 degrees) - this will be pick-up to amp power supply interference.
  7. Does the sound get better or worse if you touch metal parts of the guitar with your hand? This may be a screening issue within the lead or the guitar itself.
  8. Try turning all the individual channel tone and gain controls to zero, turn off any effects on the amp panel. If that eliminates it only turn up the controls on channels that you are actually using.

Buzzes and feedback
Make sure the "ground lift" option is used on the direct box.

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES use a headphone output jack as the output of this unit. The headphone jack is for HEADPHONES that have no return to ground. Use of this as drive to a sound board is sure to cause problems and in some cases can fry these amps due to the circuitry.

The cable used to go to the direct box should be very short and high quality.

You should source the power for this unit from the SAME source and receptacle as your sound board if at all possible.

PLUG YOUR LEAD INTO AMP TURN UP JUST A LITTLE SEE IF IT BUZZES WHEN YOU TOUCH THE END OF YOUR CABLE.IF IT BUZZES THEN THE FAULT IS IN YOUR GUITAR MOST LIKELY THE ACTIVE WIRE HAS COME OFF THE INTERNAL GUITAR PLUG.
