HI , i couldn't install my printer , after software installation the driver ask me to plug the usb cable but unfortunatelly , the device is uknown even if the usb port work properly and the usb cable is a new one delivered with my new printer .

While installing the printer just switch off the printer and try to install the printer driver completely, When the software will ask you to connect the printer then only switch on the printer. If this way still you are getting the same problem then connect the printer in other usb port or use different USB cable

Disconnect the printer first, start installing the dowloaded package, while installing it will ask you to connect the printer, then connect it.

1. Please follow the below procedure for successful installation of your printer :-
2. Unplug your printer from the power , also remove the USB cable from the computer by which the printer in connected to your computer.
3. If there is any application software that you have installed with regards to your printer please uninstall it.
4. After you uninstall the application and you are sure that you don't have any other software related to printer still installed, make sure that you restart your computer.
5. Once you restart your computer , switch on the printer by plugging it in the power socket and then connect the USB cable to the printer at one end and the computer on the other.
6. When you plug in the USB cable into your computer , you will find that the computer has detected a new device and then it will ask you to find the appropriate drivers for it.
7. Then you need to select the option which says ' choose a specific location etc...' then click browse and insert the CD/DVD that came along with the printer in the CD /DVD drive and then find the folder which contains the drivers or just select the CD Rom icon and then let the computer search for the drivers in the CD.
8. This will make the computer detect the driver which is most appropriate for this device and you will be asked if you are OK with continuing the installation , choose continue.
9. Lastly when the installation is complete, you will get a pop up at the bottom right of your screen saying that your device has been installed and is now ready to use.

It is could be a software related problem. Software called drivers are needed to run the printer. The drivers for your printer can be found on the CD disk that came with your printer. They can also be downloaded from the manufactures website, click their downloads/support button and select your model of printer. Download and install the drivers for your specific model of printer and for your specific version of Windows.

Not sure if your answer is correct, As I said Windows update thought it was downloading the correct driver and it didn't work correctly. I don;t want to say your link isn't helpfull, But I followed another suggestion and installed the Windows Vista Suite for the Brother MFC-5840CN all in one.and it not only fixed the problem it also installed all the multifunction drivers and software.So I am good for now. Thank you for responding to my delema. In case someone else needs it, Here it is.

According to your problem first check that you have installed the driver properly or reinstall the driver. Check the USB cable of the printer. Replace the cable. Turn the printer off before installing the driver. Turn it on again while the driver installation wizard will ask to connect the printer. After installation reboot the printer and system both.

Disconnect the USB cable..
Open the device manager...
Plug in the USB cable
see if you get the entry USB Printing Support under the menu
Universal serial Bus
if you don't see it replace the USb cable and try
On the Menu click on VIEW >>> Show hidden devices >>> try to find the USB print support
or the printers entry...
if you see it in some other category install the softwares
through the CD or get the drivers online through HP.com/support
it will work
if that does not work install the generic drivers
I.e open Printers&Faxes(XP), Devices&Printers(7)
click on add a printer
install a local printer
select the port as USB port
and follow the instructions
it will definetley recognize your printer

The thing is printer is automatically detected by the system and there was no proper driver was installed and it is in device manger installed as other device with yellow mark. Just uninstall it. And click on scan for hardware changes. To go to device manager right click on my computer and go to properties then hardware in that click on device manger and check there is any other device is listed if it is there just remove it and click for scan for hardware changes when he prompt for driver reinstall the driver cd.

Don’t connect the printer usb cable first
1st you install the driver disc which is come along with the printer and when the software prompt you to connect the cable then plug the usb cable and follow the instruction.

The trick with windows XP, most of the time is to install the drivers first and wait for the software to ask you to plug in the printer. Try removing the printer from your printer's folder if windows already tried to install it, reboot when it removed, then install the device drivers/software first and when asked...plug in the printer.

HOW did you re-install everything ?

Make sure you UNPLUG the usb cable first, then UNINSTALL the drivers and all software - reboot your computer - make sure at all times your usb cable is unplugged from the device - once cleaned and unisntalled - re-install drivers and software - BUT still, do not plug the cable - ONCE and only once the drivers are installed, then plug the USB cable, inspect the USB cable to make sure it's secured. Have you tried unplugging your printer for a few minutes and plugging it in again ?

IN windows device manager do you see the device listing with a yellow exclamation mark ?

If all else fails you may have a faulty circuit board on the printer.
