I drive a 1989 Volo 740 2.3L turbo, and while I am driving the engine will die out. If I flutter the gas peddle sometimes I can keep the car going. I changed the fuel filter, the prime pump in the tank, and resealed the tank nice, along with hoses checks. As of now I keep one foot on the gas and one foot on the brake. When my car is on it runs smooth. What is going on with my Volvo?

Hi,

That sounds like a carburetor problem. It really needs to open it up and clean everything or overhaul it.

Try to hand choke it. take out the air filter assembly, you would see the carb, start the engine, pull the accelerator cable by hand to have it revving up. Use hand to choke it while revving it, thus it will clean and dislodge any foreign materials/dirt inside.

Hope that helps you out.

Thanks for asking FixYa!

Usually- the turbo's wastegate gets stuck from the heat/corrosion. A couple shots of pen oil I recomend PB BLASTER- (non flammable). Actuate the lever manually- with the engine WARM- NOT HOT OR COLD!! If the wastgate is frozen- its plugging and choking the exhaust.

Engine flutters loudly at stop lights. Sounds normal when driving.

You should not drive a car if the check engine light comes on and you do not know what the problem is. In some cases the check engine light means a serious problem and I know could cost a lot of money to repair. Mine came on and cost $800 dollars to repair as I tried to drive it.

Drive vehicle down the road for 20 minutes and come to a stoplight engine stops when you take foot off gas peddle and go to apply brake. To keep vehicle from dying you have to hold the gas peddle down

Have you changed the timing belt? or timing belt guides? How many miles? This does not necessarily have to do with fuel.... Could have to do with air intake or timing as well....

1989 camaro engine

Here is a link for you to check the DTC code to see what issues your engine management has detected. I am going to suspect the EGR valve may be stuck open, that's why your having most of the problem you have described. Good luck and keep me posted and check or replace the EGR valve, the car is too old to just clean out the EGR valve.

1989 Dodge Ramcharger

That could be caused by several things. Is your check engine light on? If it is on it could be due to a number of sensors such as the MAF(mass air flow), MAP(manifold absolute pressure), or EGR(exhaust gas recirculation). However if your check engine light is not on it could be caused by bad plugs and or wires, lack of fuel pressure caused by fauly fuel filter and or fuel pump, or it could be caused by the timing being off a few degree's. Please provide me with the engine size and any work that has been done to that vechile recently to help rule out some of these possibilitys.

Hope this helps for now.
