Having been given a Celestron LT 76AZ for Christmas, the viewer seems to be in the wrong place, ie horizontal, and the image seen is upside down - can I rectify this?

This telescope works by a mirror. The image is upside down, sorry.
However you might want to get a Telescope USB camera, then you can see the image on your PC the right way up.

Manual for national geographic NG-76AZ telescope

The NG76AZ is made by Citiwell, but the only manual I can find is on retrevo for the 114 (the adjustments are the same, though). If you have a specific question about using the scope, post it here or go to cloudynights-dot-com, it's a forum & they have a beginners area that's really helpful!

How far should your eye be away from the eye piece,We are having trouble seeing anything and we are new to a telescope

It depend on the eyepiece anywhere from 10-20mm away.

Put the eyepiece with the largest number written on it into the focuser. DO NOT use the 2x barlow -- practice focusing on a distant object during the day time.

76AZ-AD (180 x 76mm) Telescope: I recently purchased a Meade telescope but can not...

Does it have a name on the scope? If it has a MIRROR in the bottom it is a REFLECTOR.

If it has a lens on the front it is a REFRACTOR. Look on Meade's manual web site under the header REFRACTOR or REFLECTOR for one similar to your telescope.
