Sub woofer hum, any help?

By Jimmy NY - usenet poster

" "
I just got a new Sony STR-DE635.  Have my sub hooked
up in the back with a male rca cable, which splits into two and has
adapters to connect to another Y cable which eventually leads into the Left
and Right  jacks into my JBL PSW-1000.  Any ideas as to why I have a hum while
playing anything.  Is it the wiring I have?  The sub is about 15 feet away
from the reciever, and had these wires around to connect them.  If a new wire
job is recommended to fix the hum, I'll do it.  The hum, even though some
people don't notice it, I do, and it drives me nuts.
Please email me with any help.

-   I have the same problem - an audible buzz when powered up. In th repair shop all is fine (of course!) so it sounds like it's my local power supply. The repair shop reckon that devices designed to reduce hum (eg Radio Shack) don't work - any idea?-   the_vaughans

I think this may just be a problem with the Infinity BU series based on
the reviews at audioreview.com. I have a BU150 myself which I just got and
even with my ear right next to it I can't hear any hum. It seems you've done
everything you can to try and eliminate the hum, I would guess that it's
most likely the BU120 itself that's at fault. That's the only thing I can
suggest..

I'm not satisfied with the BU150 because it has a total lack of bass
below 36hz, and that's unacceptable. I'm probably going to return it and go
with a Klipsch KSW12 instead. While we're on that subject can anyone tell me
how good the Klipsch subwoofer is? Thanks

The only way to fix this is to buy a good sub woofer other than this one.,

 >>>Radio Shack sells a Ground Loop eliminator thingy.  It works!  I had the
same problem.  You run your LFE out to the GLEthingy, then plug that into
your sub.  It should eliminate the buzzing...<<<

That does work sometimes...but it also adds a little distortion to the
signal...mainly  <32hz.

 It's not a *day/night* thing...but if you can quickly A/B it...you MAY be able
to hear it.  I think it ends up adding 2-3%....nothing to really get hung
about.Doubly so when using it on a BU-120, those babies die about a half octave
higher.

Nothing shows up at the RadioShack web site when I do a search for
Ground Loop Eliminator or GLE. Is it called something else?

The Infinity sub is only a 2 prong unit.  My boss said to try a
"cheater" that will allow me to flip the polarized plug.

If you have cable tv, try disconnecting the coax from the wall and see

There are devices that Monster and other companies put out that go on
the cable tv coax to eliminate the ground loop.  Give this a try.

If the power cable from the sub has three wires (three prong plug) and the
outlet that you are plugging it into also has a three prong receptacle your
hum might be entering through the ground wire. Try using a two to three
prong adaptor, this will remove the ground and problem eliminate your hum.
Don't install the small screw on the adaptor to the wall plate this will
only reconnect the ground.

I've got an Infinity BU-120, and it's got a low hum even when
disconnected from the receiver.  I actually knew about the hum before I
bought it from reading the review at
http://www.audioreview.com/rev iews/Speaker/product_7356.shtm l , but I
didn't think it would bother me.  Well, it's not very loud, but when
it's really quiet, I can hear it.  My idea before I bought the sub was
to just plug it into the outlet in the back of my receiver, but someone
told me that the outlet wasn't designed for such a load.  So, now I'm
wondering about solutions to the hum.  Changing outlets hasn't helped
so far.  My boss recommends the new Monster power strip as a possible
solution.

Any ideas?
