Cradle Jam, Mechanism error

Whenever I give print command, the cartridge cradle is stuck at the right hand corner, paper is half drawn,red light flashes and an error message appears as"cradle jam,mechanism error" and can't print. For last two years, it was giving me trouble free service.I am using Windows XP3, original HP 57 and 56/58 ink cartridges.The loacal HP authorised technician failed and returned me the same after two months.I am an retired Electrical Engineer and if proper guidance be given,hope I will be able to rectify it.

    I have same problem. Cradle used to move to the center when top cover was opened to replace ink cartridges, now it does not even do that. Why can't someone design a printer that lasts longer than 2-3 years??

SOURCE: Mechanism Error - Print Cradle won't move! - HP 5650

This "plastic strip" is called the "carriage encoder strip". This strip dictates the timing of the carriage assembly. If the end slots aren't broken, you can re-attach it. Otherwise, you'll need to replace it. They are about $10.

I have had this problem with my 7550 for a while now and I finally found this on the HP website and it seems to have fixed my problem, I also replaced all of the cartridges:

Issue While printing from an HP Photosmart printer, the printer screen displays Print cartridge cradle is stuck / clear jam and then press OK . The printer may also make grinding sounds. This can occur after a paper jam when another printer part blocks the cradle. Solution Follow these instructions to adjust the clutch on the printer.

  1. Disconnect the USB cable.
  2. Press the printer power button to turn off the printer.
  3. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
  4. Open the top cover of the printer.
  5. Remove the print cartridges from the printer.
  6. Slide the cradle to the right side of the printer.
  7. Locate the clutch on the left side of the printer.
    NOTE: The clutch is a flat, white, plastic component that rests just above the white roller gear wheel. In the HP Photosmart P1000 and P1100 printers, the clutch is black metal. Figure 1: Printer clutch c00020494.jpg
  8. Remove the rear access door from the back of the printer.
  9. Press the clutch firmly towards the back of the printer, while rolling the wheels in the back of the printer upward two full rotations.
  10. Release the clutch and roll the wheels up two more rotations.
  11. Reinstall the rear access door.
  12. Reinstall the print cartridges and secure the latches in place.
  13. Close the top cover and reconnect the power cord.
  14. Turn on the printer.
  15. Print a test page.

Fixed it myself...found this link:

It would print the Tap Test as instructed in this illustration....but then wouldn't move to print anything else. So redid the Tap Test several times....then I lifted the lid while printing a test page so the cartridge was in the center and I could get ahold of it to slide it....left the printer ON, but unplugged the power cable...and then I was able to move the cartridge back and forth. I then took QTips with Windex on them and cleaned the silver bar the cartridge moves on. Got a lot of ink off of it.
A couple more test prints...and sliding the cartridge......and it is finally running again.

There seems to be a problem with the cradle not "lifting" itself up and over what appears to be some sort of guide. Rock the cradle gently back by hand (it will only move a few millimeters) and move it all the way to the right into its bay. Cycle the printer power and it should be fine.

Hi, I have a HP Photosmart 8050. Runs good till Now. 1, ONE Sheet of paper Jamed. THe RED Light Keeps Blinking Like crazzzy. I unhooked it to re-boot. It says Print Cartridge Cradle is stuck. Clear Jam & press OK. Iv'e L@@KED 4 anything. Nothing in way. I took the ONE sheet out. Still Nothing. It's Like my X-wife. 1 item wrong and a Bunch of ****. New Ink. Got Milk. Oh wrong Commercial. BROTHER P-TOUCH IS not printing


It is obvious it has a failed electronic component, since these are not repaired/exchanged except when they are under warranty best thing to do is just replace it.

How do I correct error h5 on a Sharp printer AR-5620N?


Hello Sudhir,
The error code H5 means there was at least 5 pages in a row where the paper did not come out of the printer correctly (most likely paper jams. The following manual will direct you on the steps needed to clear the code, please note especially page #8-3

This is codes for the ink cartridge. The code means there is a problem with the cartridge. Change them both and restart the machine.

Why is print quality poor after inserting new ink. Copies are faint and have lines


the cartridge is clogged with ink that has dried and reduced the slit. you need to replace the cartridge with a new one. it happens usually if you recharge the cartridge 3 or 4 times with compatible ink.

Printer won't recognize cartridge


I had the same problem. I'm not sure but I think I replaced the cartridges when the printer was on because I turned the printer off and removed one of the cartridges. When I turned the printer back on it recognized that cartridge but not the others. I turned the printer off again, rmoved all cartiridges and put them back in when the printer was still off. When I turned the printer on again I had no problems. So...try turning off the printer, rmove all cartridges, then put them back in and restart printer. Hope this works for you .
