I tried a fresh install of windows xp pro on my laptop and I get this message:
"An unexpected error (1882796370) occurred at at line 1773 in d:\xpsprtm\base\boot\setup\arcdisp.c."
can you help me out?
This generally indicates that the disc is corrupt. It can be anything from a scratch, degraded read section on the disc, or a distortion from the disc getting bent or hot (left in direct sunlight). You will most likely have to use a different disc for the install.
This could be the cd drive. Try cleaning the lens. I've had a few drives that were just flat picky when it came to the disc it was reading. You might also try burning a copy of the XP disc and trying it that way. One other way I've been able to load an operating system into a stubborn machine is to load the hard drive on a different machine, then do a system repair on the machine you're trying to load. Generally the system configurations aren't compatible enough to run the operating system, but the repair will pick up the new configuration, and reinstall all the files for it to run correctly. I know it's a pain, but if it won't load, what are ya gonna do? Try these and let me know.

It interesting b'cos I ran the same disk on another pc and it works fine. I inserted a another xp disk and this time it says that "setupdd.sys could not be loaded. error code is 7"
how do I clean the lense?
To cleanse the lens use the purest rubbing alcohol you can find (the radio shack cd cleaner is isopropanol, eg pure rubbing alcohol, above 91% according to this page)
