Pop up that says I have a hard disk problem and that I should back up my file immediately to prevent information loss and contact the computer manufacturer to determine if the disk needs fixed or replaced. Nothing has happened yet apart from this warning but it keeps poping up? Any help would be appreciated. Jamie

When I look in disk manager it shows my external hard drive is in raw

DO NOT FORMAT YOUR DISK. It has been damaged; how easy or even possible to recover your data depends on the degree of damage.
Try your HD in another computer; if it works, make a back-up of your files on another disk.
To understand what RAW format means, try this
http://www.ehow.com/facts_7167186_raw-disk-format_.html
or look for it in Wikipedia.
By searching the internet ("raw disk has data on it"), the first article I found was this
http://html5.litten.com/how-to-fix-external-disk-drive-suddenly-became-raw/
which may be of some help.
In that article a Linux system is used to read and modify the disk. There other tools for repairing this type of fault, for example, http://www.easeus.com/resource/recover-raw-disk.htm
(I do not know if this free:: the information in the article is certainly free though)
Recovering your files will probably mean a lot reading, research and time, but you might be lucky. I recommend reading any article you are going to use through to the end before you start with it.

How back up your files (data) before doing system restore

<p>1. Use of pre-installed backup tools. Many computers have a backup software installed when you buy (including Time Machine backup and restore for Mac or Windows). These tools are designed to transfer files to various media they create on the computer hard drive or external hard drive, you can prevent a total loss of data is performed. When you open the utility, follow the onscreen instructions to complete the backup. <br /> <p><br /> <p>2. Back up important files on a USB stick or Memory Stick. Insert the stick into a USB port on your computer. Drag the selected files to the disk icon on the desktop (Mac) or PC (Windows) will appear. Flash drives and memory sticks are very mobile and can be stored in small spaces such as basements. Although they generally do not have a capacity of more than a few gigabytes (GB), they are large enough to store your important files. <br /> <p><br /> <p>3. Enter an external hard drive. These external hard drives usually have a very large capacity and can therefore keep most or all files on a disk. Connect the external hard drive via a USB port. You can drag and drop files on your hard disk or use it as a means of backup using a backup utility installed. <br /> <p><br /> <p>4. Burn your important files on a CD-R or DVD-R. an entire hard disk backup can be many slices, so this option is ideal if you want large media files or documents for easy access later. Insert the CD into the CD-ROM and follow the instructions on the screen (for Windows and Mac) to back up and store files. <br /> <p><br /> <p>5. Upload files for storage in the cloud. Services in the Internet cloud storage (like Mozy and drop-down box) are great ways to backup files to the internet access from any Internet enabled device. Important files with sensitive information may only be attached to a back-up cloud services such as Mozy. Clouds, Drop box is ideal for backing up photos, videos and other files less sensitive.<br />

Master hard disc..Message stating that Windows has detected a problem.

Back up your files immediately to prevent information loss, and then contact the computer manufacturer to determine if you need to repair or replace the disk.

+ Start the backup process

* Ask me again later

If the disk fails before the next warning, you could lose all of the programs and documents on the disk.

Immediate steps
Because a disk failure will cause you to lose all programs, files and documents on the disk, you should back up your important information immediately. Try not to use your computer until you have repaired or replaced the hard disk.

My computer says ,(back up your files immediately to prevent information loss, and then contact the computer manufacturer to determine if you need to repair or replace disk)

Hi familiacash2,

This is an impending warning of a failing disk. Your hard drive stands a risk of failing. In order not to lose your files and important documents, including your system files, you have to back them on to any external device. It could be an external hard drive or even another pc. But for your system recovery softwares/files, dont back them on to the recovery partition of your hard drive(you would loose them if the crash occurs). Also back them on to any external device..
To back up your recovery fiels, when the message comes on again, and you have the external device to back on to, connect it to your pc, and click the notification banner at the bottom of your screen prompting you to perform the back up, and allow the system files to back it self onto the external disk.
When you are done with that, format your pc and do a reinstallation. If the message still occurs, then contact your manufacturers, for them to check the disk.

Hope that helped?
Have a wonderful day.
