I have an acer aspire5517, when I turn it on i see the windows 7 startup screen, then just all black. After about 30 secondsmy screen savercomes on, as soon as i move the mouse it returns to a black screen. What might be causing this?

things to try 1-unplug,remove battery - wait 30 sec,reseat RAM,turn back on.2 unplug remove battery hold down power button 45sec plug in,no battery,turn on.3 use startup repair.4 press Alt + F10 to restore.

Try to disable all the unused application from startup entries follow below procedure
Window button + R
MSCONFIG

you will see startup items disable which you dont use

I'm thinking from what you describe that you are just looking at the cursor blinking in the upper left corner of the screen.
You haven't said what you did or what you are trying to do, but I suggest you turn the computer off (just push the power button in for about 7 seconds) and then restart it after about 15 seconds. If it doesn't start, go through the process again but this time, after you turn it on, tap on the F8 key. Like tap---tap---tap and keep doing that until you get a black screen with a white menu on it. Use your arrow keys to select "repair your computer" that you will see if you are using windows 7.

This should repair you startup problem.

if you have just bought the laptop take it back to the shop where you bought it from other then that you could try a factory restore

in that case you will need to re-instal windows seven.

yes, try use f8 and see if you can go into safe mode and check what is wrong with the dsiplay screen.

try changing the screen mode to by press the "fn" key + F5 and use an external screen to confirm whether the laptop is working properly or not.

I have the same problem! I received a response to my email telling me to disconnect adapter and battery, hold the power button 30 minutes, connect ac (make sure it's plugged), turn on, wait 1-7 minutes, then attach battery after windows boots. After several tries, it still hasn't worked. When I turn on the system, my power led stays green, but the hdd indicator is not lit. My battery can still recharge, but the screen is still black, and there is no sound.

There may have been a software driver for your monitor for windows Vista to set the correct parameters

theres a good chance that the hard drive platletes and parking head have been damaged, although this is not a huge problem to replace, as long as your screen is working ok, then it is worth replacing. you can access it on the underside of the casing, in the largest compartment, remove all screws and the hard drive will be held in with more screws.
