Question about Compaq Presario 700 470024-192 Notebook
I must add to geminii lady's solution, that you will have to enter the bios first (F2 or Del on start up) and make the cdrom your first boot device instead of the hard drive as the cd will not just boot up when you put into the drive a reboot, it would just look for an operating system.
When the system reboots you will be prompted to press enter to boot from cd
assuming you have a cd, your notebook is a bit old, but you will need to install more ram if you can find it as 256MB is not enough

First things first - you are aware that formatting will lose ALL information on your pc (including possibly some of your drivers) Make back up copies of everything you will need including your driver files. Also (sorry don't have time to look up the spec of your particular computer) are you sure that your computer has a processor/memory to cope with XP.
Assuming you have the disk to install and not a restore disk or an update disk. All you need to do is switch computer on, put cd in the drawer, shut down and reboot. The disk should automatically run. Follow the on screen prompts (quick format is normally fine) delete/create any partitions you want and basically leave it to it's own devices. At one stage it will appear to shut down but reboots itself. You WILL HAVE TO HAVE A KEY (the numbers to verify your disc). Eventually your screen will look kind of normal and you will be told what stage your install is at. Again follow on screen prompts.
It's not difficult to do but If your not at all sure about what you are doing be very wary
