An electrician installed a new Tork 1103 24 hr timer for the pool pump. You can only manually turn it on and off. When trying to set the time, the dial is loose and does not stay in position and does not turn when the pool pump is on. The trippers work if I manually turn the dial.

I think you have 120Volt pool pump.
Add a comment if this is incorrect since wiring information is based on this assumption.

(1) Wiring problem:
Evidence shows timer is wired in reverse (dial only rotates when pump is ON, and dial stops rotating when pool pump is OFF)
Electrician reversed the wires, but wires need to be tested.
Hot wire from circuit breaker always connects to L
Neutral wire from breaker box connects to unmarked terminal.
This will give clock motor continuous power.
Next:
Black wire going to Load (pump) connects to X
White wire going to Load connects to unmarked terminal along with Neutral wire.

Tork 1103 is SPDT timer with 3 watt 120volt clock motor that can control multiple loads and voltages, and can be wired many different ways.

http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/1103INSTALLOP.pdf

(2) Loose dial. The dial should only rotate counterclockwise when moved with hand. The fact that trippers work when rotated by hand says dial is probably not problem. If timer is used, and trippers skip over and do not turn on Load (pump) then order P47 replacement trippers.

Yes, it is a 120 V pump. The timer dial can be easily turned counter clockwise or clockwise and does not move at all when the pump is on.

  • Anonymous Aug 07, 2011

Need specific information to avoid guessing at your timer problem. (1) The dial does not rotate at all except when you move it. Is that 100% correct? (2) Are you sure this is Tork 1103 timer, so I have correct information at this end. For example 1104 looks identical but has 240Volt clock motor and will never operate on 120V circuit. Pull timer mechanism out and say what markings show on clock motor. (3) Where did timer come from? Is this a new timer or used timer? (4) You say the timer dial is 'loose' and 'does not stay in position:' Is that loose on all axis? Or does the dial stay flat and level like a frisbee? (5) Did electrician say anything pertinent about these problems? (6) What amp circuit breaker connects to timer? (7) What color are the romex cables that enter timer? Yellow for 12 gauge, orange for 10 gauge, etc. (8) How many romex cables enter timer box, I assume one cable from circuit breaker and 1 cable going to Load > each cable has black and white wires. (9) Exactly what screw terminals show inside box, and what are they each marked? (10) What terminals do each of the wires connect to? Please include which romex cable each wire comes from.

I am having the same problem with my timer. In the past i would have to lightly press in to turn the timer dial. Now, i can turn it clockwise without applying pressure. it turns on without problem but will not turn off when allowed to run. when i turn the dial manually, both on and off works. I have replaced the trippers.

  • manthorj Aug 08, 2011

correction, i can turn it counter clockwise without pushing in slighty.

  • Anonymous Aug 08, 2011

Tork timer dial should only turn counterclockwise. Timers wear out and need replacement. As general rule, if dial is rotating on time, and new trippers do not restore function, then timer has gone bad. That's one reason to buy new timer and not to buy used timer from auction site. I recommend Intermatic timers. Tork 1101 replacement is Intermatic T101. Tork 1103 replacement is Intermatic T103. Tork 1104 replacement is T104. Or look up any brand timer on crossover link:http://www.intermatic.com/customer%20ser...

After removing the timer motor and allowing it to run separated from the switch for 45 minutes with a piece of tape wound around the motor shaft, I discovered that the motor is just humming, and not moving the shaft gear. I need a new timer motor.

Timer cuts on , but will not turn off

assuming that this is a mechanical timer with set points for off and on red points turn on and black points turn off. set the red point for your on time and then be sure to set black point for off. Best to tighten 1/8 turn (slightly) with pliers so it does not slip

Tork pool timer dial, spins freely, not keeping time or switching on or off. Do I need a new one or can I fix it?.

Timer is not 100% identified.
120Volt Tork 1101 timers can be fixed with repair parts.
Generally, plug-in-outlet timer has gone bad, then it cannot be fixed.

How do you program a Tork 602A timer? I can't get mine to cycle on and off at a desired time.

The Tork 602A mechanical outdoor timer with 2 grounded outlets.
Tork 601A and 602A manual
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Tork-601A-Manual.pdf
Manual has images of timer that will help.

Plug timer into outdoor outlet.
To set current time, rotate dial clockwise until current time lines up with arrowhead located on inner dial.
Dial is divided into light and dark sections that represent day or nighttime hours.
Reset time after power outage.

96 pins located around timer dial are used to set on-off times.
Each pin represents 15 minutes in 24 hour day
Move pins in-or-out with fingernail or ink pen to set timer on-off functions.
With Tork timers, usually when pins are out, timer is ON.
When pins are in, timer is OFF.
To double-check pin setting, manually rotate timer to watch when lights turn on-off.

Set multiple ON/OFFs each day.
Change on-off times by resetting a pin or two.
Timer repeats every 24-hours.

Manual ON/TIMER switch is located on inner dial.

Set Manual switch to TIMER for programs to operate.
To override time and turn on Load, move override to ON position.

Tork 601A outdoor timer manual:
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Tork-601A-Manual.pdf

Timer has 1 125Volt receptacle located on bottom of timer

96 captive tabs located around timer dial allow times to be set each 15 minutes.
Move pins in-or-out with fingernail or pen to set timer on-off functions.
Minimum time setting is 15 minutes.
Maximum time setting 23 ¾ hours.
Set multiple ON/OFFs each day.
Timer repeats every 24-hours.

Dial is divided into daylight and nighttime hours.
Nighttime PM hours are on dark background.
Daylight hours are on light background.

To set timer, rotate dial clockwise until current time lines up with arrowhead located on inner dial. Reset time after power outage.
Manual ON/TIMER switch located on inner dial.
To override time and turn on Load, move override to ON position. To use timer functions, move override to TIMER position

I have a tork 1103 electromechanical switch. its working but wont

T1103 can be wired many ways.
T1103 has 240V clock motor.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Tork-timers-and-manuals.html#1101

You are connecting 240Volt pool pump to timer.
Open link below and see wiring diagram: look at bottom left diagram:
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/110111021103WIRING.pdf

Electricians don't guess, they test.
Turn power off and separate wires for testing.
Tape tester leads to wood sticks to keep hands away from power.
Stand on dry boards. Wear dry clothes.
Do not touch anything metal.
Turn power ON.
Test each wire to bare ground wire.
For 240V circuit, two different wires should light up tester. Working from your description, by code, these wires should be black and red.
Each of these wires is Hot wire.
These are called Line wires, wires going to pump are called Load wires.
Hot wires connect to terminals L and 1. This will power the clock motor and dial will rotate as time passes, assuming clock motor is good.

Hots are identified.
Test one of the hot wires to remaining wire, and not to bare ground.
Tester lights up on Neutral wire. This should be white wire.
Double check that Neutral wire did not light up on bare ground.
Neutral is not connected to any 1103 terminal.

Remaining wires go to Load (pool pump).
By code, assuming Hot Lines are Red and Black, the Red & Black Load wires connect to X terminal and 2 terminal, in either order. One wire on each terminal.
White wire connects to Neutral wire and is covered with wire nut.
